People credited with this unit standard will be able to: review preventative maintenance schedules; prepare a new or revise an existing maintenance schedule; implement and evaluate a maintenance schedule; and manage a preventative maintenance programme for carpet tufting machinery.

Explanatory notes

1 The maintenance schedules prepared as part of the unit standard will include both long and short term maintenance.

2 Definitions

Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Long period maintenance includes lubrication and replacement of worn or damaged machine parts and is performed at intervals greater than three months.

Short period maintenance include lubrication and replacement of key tufting components and is usually carried out when changing the configuration of the tufting machine.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Review the preventative maintenance schedules for carpet tufting machines.

Range all tufting machines in operation in the workplace.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The purpose of preventative machine maintenance is explained in terms of its impact on production quality and scheduling.

Range short period maintenance, long period maintenance.

The documentation for existing maintenance schedules is assembled in accordance with workplace procedures.

1.3 A summary of the essential features of each schedule is prepared in accordance with workplace procedures.

Prepare a new or revise an existing maintenance schedule.

Evidence requirements

Input received from appropriate staff is analysed and relevant items are selected for inclusion in the draft maintenance schedule.

2.2 Draft maintenance schedule is finalised and presented to management for implementation in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range timing, frequency, sections and parts identified, lubrication and machine adjustments.

Outcome 3

Implement and evaluate the draft maintenance schedule.

Evidence requirements

3.1 The draft maintenance schedule is implemented in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2 Implementation of the draft maintenance schedule is evaluated in accordance with workplace procedures.

The draft schedule is updated to address the results of the evaluation.

Adoption of the new or revised draft maintenance schedule is approved by management in accordance with workplace procedures.

Outcome 4

Monitor a preventative maintenance programme for carpet tufting machinery.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Feedback concerning possible improvements to existing maintenance procedures is analysed.

4.2 Relevant maintenance documents are modified to reflect feedback.
