NZQA Expiring unit standard Title Backsize woven carpet Level 2 7218 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Credits 4 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the carpet manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of woven carpet backsizing; prepare a backsizing line for operation; operate a backsizing line and monitor the process; and keep the line and work area clean. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of woven carpet backsizing. Evidence requirements 1.1 Backsizing is described in terms of the process and the reason for carrying it out. 1.2 Machine sections are identified and described in terms of their function and operation. Range 1.3 machine controls, carpet feed and sew on, J box, tension rollers, bow rollers, steamer, latex applicator, drying oven. Safety procedures for the use of a backsizing line are described according to workplace procedure. Outcome 2 Prepare a backsizing line for operation. Range carpets in specified sequence, seams straight, carpet aligned in machine. 2.3 Latex applicator is full and prepared according to workplace procedure. 2.4 Machine settings produce carpet backsized to specification. Range 2.5 feed rate, tension, temperature in drying oven, steamer conditions, latex application, out feed, bow roller. Sewing machine is prepared according to workplace practice. Range thread up, needle condition. Outcome 3 Operate a backsizing line and monitor the process. Evidence requirements 3.1 Backsizing line is operated according to workplace practice, and in accordance with workplace safety procedures. 3.2 Carpet is steamed according to workplace practice. 3.3 Latex is applied to carpet back evenly and at specified rate. 3.4 Carpet feeds evenly and remains aligned in dryer. 3.5 Carpet exits drying oven with latex cured and dry. 3.6 Machine malfunction is identified, and action is taken according to workplace practice. 3.7 Records are maintained according to workplace procedure. Outcome 4 Keep the line and work area clean. Evidence requirements 4.1 Backing line is cleaned according to workplace requirements.
