NZQA Expiring unit standard Title Shear carpet Level 3 7199 version 7 Page 1 of 4 Credits 20 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the carpet manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of carpet shearing; prepare a shearing machine for operation; shear carpet; and maintain machine and work area. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Carpet Manufacture Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Plant safety practices and procedures comply with Health and Safety in Employment (HSE) Act 1992, and workplace procedures. 2 Workplace productivity and quality requirements are met. 3 Competence may be demonstrated on unbacked or backed tufted carpet, or woven carpet before or after backsizing. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of carpet shearing. Evidence requirements 1.1 Shearing is described in terms of process objectives. Range 1.2 Shearing equipment is described in terms of function and operation. Range 1.3 produce smooth surface, develop texture. machine controls, blade, bed, cylinder, brushes, in-feed, out-feed, safety interlocks and cut-outs, threading sequence, metal detector, extraction system. Safety procedures for the use of a shearing machine are described according to workplace procedure. Evidence requirements 2.1 Machine is prepared according to plant safety procedures. 2.2 Machine settings produce shorn carpet to specification. Range 2.3 feed rate, blade speed, blade height, cylinder speed, brush speed, carpet width. Carpet is presented to the machine and threaded according to operating procedure. Outcome 3 Shear carpet. Evidence requirements 3.1 Machine is operated according to plant safety procedures. 3.2 Carpet is cut to height according to work instruction. 3.3 Cut surface is clean and meets quality standards. 3.4 Edge tufts of woven carpet are trimmed cleanly. 3.5 Machine operation is monitored according to workplace procedure. Range carpet in alignment, backing smooth, carpet not puckering. 3.6 Joins pass through machine without damage to machine or carpet. 3.7 Records are maintained according to workplace practice. Outcome 4 Maintain machine and work area. Evidence requirements 4.1 Shearing machine is maintained, and maintenance requirements are actioned according to workplace practice. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 7199 version 7 Page 3 of 4 4.2 Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination. 4.3 Shearing machine components are kept free of unwanted fibre, fluff, and grease during processing according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures. 4.4 Fibre extraction equipment is maintained according to workplace practice. 4.5 Shearing machine is cleaned at end of a job according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
