Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in the carpet
manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard
are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the carpet backing
process; prepare a backing line for operation; sew carpet to
leader or previous carpet piece; operate and monitor a carpet
backing line; and carry out close down procedures.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the carpet backing process.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Backing line sections are described in terms of their function and operation.
Range
feed-in, steamer, bow and skew adjustment, chemical applicators,
jute latex applicator, direct coat applicator, dryer, secondary
backing supply, dryer controls, and other equipment installed in
the workplace.
Outcome 2
Prepare a backing line for operation.
Evidence requirements

Machine is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

Daily set-up routine is according to workplace procedure.

Backing line is operated in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

Sections are monitored and adjusted to produce product to specification.

Evidence requirements
5.1
Close down routine is according to workplace procedures.
Range
leader cloth fed, sections stopped in sequence, rollers and tanks
cleaned, applicator and foamer cleaned.
5.2
Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted
according to type to prevent contamination.
5.3
Backing line is cleaned at end of a batch according to plant requirement and in
accordance with plant safety procedures.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.

an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
