NZQA registered unit standard 28979 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Assist with rearing of young dairy stock Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are assisting with the rearing of young dairy stock from birth until weaning in a specific farming context. Classification Agriculture > Livestock Husbandry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 A specific farming context relates to those in the dairy industry such as dairy cows, dairy goats, or dairy sheep. 2 Assessment for this unit standard should be achieved in the context of a specific farming dairy operation. 3 Feed requirements are those requirements of young dairy stock from birth (first colostrum feed) through to weaning or sale. 4 Candidates must comply with current legal requirements of rearing young dairy stock including the Animal Welfare Act 1999, the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Act 2012, and relevant codes where they relate to the farming context including the Codes of Welfare. 5 Candidates must comply with hygiene and health and safety requirements and onfarm procedures when handling young stock. 6 Demonstrate understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of rearing requirements of young dairy stock. Evidence requirements 1.1 Demonstrates understanding of rumen development and the relationship to feed. Outcome 2 Assist with feeding young dairy stock. Evidence requirements 2.1 Feeding is done hygienically and young stock are handled gently and with care. 2.2 Monitors and reports feed intake. Outcome 3 Assist with treatment and prevention of health problems in young dairy stock. Evidence requirements 3.1 Monitors and reports common health problems. 3.2 Assists with the prevention and treatment of health problems. 3.3 Assists to ensure housing and/or shelter are hygienic and suitable. Outcome 4 Assist with weaning of young dairy stock. Evidence requirements 4.1 Monitors and reports condition. 4.2 Assists to prepare for transport as required.
