This unit standard is for people who wish to acquire the
specialist skill of gilding for the signmaking industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for
gilding with metal leaf; gild letters and graphics; and ensure the
task is complete.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Selection of metal leaf is consistent with requirements of substrate and client
brief.
Range
examples include but are not limited to – gold leaf standard,
double gold, ribbon gold, platinum, white gold, dutch gold, imitation
gold, aluminium, silver.
2.2
Size is applied evenly, to adhere to substrate and dry uniformly, allowing
sufficient time for application of transfer gilding.
2.3
Most economical use of metal is demonstrated and blemish free application is
achieved.
2.4
Gilding is burnished to produce shiny, wrinkle-free finish with all waste leaf
removed.
2.5
Application of decorative effects complies with design brief.
2.6
Protective coating compatible with metal leaf is applied evenly to achieve
complete coverage and without damage to gilding.
