People credited with this unit standard are able to: complete pre-gas checks; burn in the gas; and complete a neon sign. Classification Graphic Arts > Signmaking Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters. 2 Reference to company policy means any policies, procedures, and requirements of the company involved, and the ethical codes of relevant professional management. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 This unit standard is Evidence requirements expiring Complete pre-gas checks. 1.1 Job requirements are determined from specifications. 1.2 Safety check of gas cylinders and equipment is completed prior to commencement of work. 1.3 Malfunctioning equipment is rendered inoperable and reported according to procedures laid down in the workplace. 1.4 Prepared glass is checked prior to introduction of gas. Range includes but is not limited to – connections. Outcome 2 Burn in the gas. Range 2.2 Gas is introduced into cooled glass in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations covering the use of pumping station and equipment. Range 2.3 includes but is not limited to – neon gas, argon gas. Gas work is completed to job specifications. Range 2.4 includes but is not limited to – vacuuming, pumping, cooling. includes but is not limited to – sealing, ageing, blackening. All gas work complies with safety regulations for the use and handling of gas and gas cylinders and pumping equipment. Outcome 3 Complete a neon sign. Evidence requirements 3.1 Tube supports are used to attach neon sign to board/panel to ensure sign is secure. 3.2 Tools, equipment and materials are cleaned, stored and maintained according to company policy. 3.3 Waste materials are removed and stored in designated location. 3.4 Patterns are labelled and stored according to company policy.
