People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of air bag systems and their safety precautions, and demonstrate safety precautions on vehicles fitted with air bags. Classification Motor Industry > Vehicle Bodywork Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Air bags are classified as explosive articles under the Explosives Act, Class 6.1 and therefore fall under the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations. 2 Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992 applies when carrying out workshop duties in outcome 2. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of air bag systems and their safety precautions. Range electronic system, self-contained all mechanical system. Evidence requirements 1.1 The layout and locations of the various components in an air bag system are described according to vehicle manufacturer’s workshop manual description. Range 1.2 impact sensors, control module, air bag module, clock spring. The system operation from vehicle impact to air bag deployment is described according to vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Range battery and power supply, welding and heating, repairs and replacements to system, personal protection and handling procedures, handling and treating non-deployed air bag module as an explosive device, electrical testing precautions (including inadvertent tampering when testing other systems), labelling, disposal, storage. Outcome 2 Demonstrate safety precautions on vehicles fitted with air bags. Evidence requirements 2.1 Vehicle servicing precautions are taken with reference to manufacturer's workshop manual instructions and OSH Regulations. 2.2 The battery is disconnected according to workshop manual instructions and all back-up power is discharged before any work near air bag mechanisms and systems is carried out on the vehicle. 2.3 Safe working practices are carried out when working near air bag system components and circuits.
