NZQA Expiring unit standard 3868 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Mask a repair for priming in the motor body industry Level 2 Credits 2 Purpose This unit standard is for people who are at pre-employment level or who have recently started work in the motor body industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of masking in the motor body industry; prepare to mask an area; and mask out an area for the application of primer in the motor body industry. It is assumed the policy also meets product manufacturers' specifications, recommendations, and standards. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of masking in the motor body industry. Evidence requirements 1.1 Purpose of masking materials is identified according to manufacturer‘s specifications. Range 1.2 masking tapes, paper, plastic and other coverings, liquid masking materials, masking machines and tools used to cut masking paper. Principles of masking are identified. Range single and double masking. Range two pack masking, single pack masking. 1.4 Masking materials and tools are stored and maintained according to the manufacturer‘s specifications and company policy. 1.5 Techniques for removing masking are identified according to manufacturer's specifications and company policy. Outcome 2 Prepare to mask an area. Evidence requirements 2.1 Area to be masked is clean according to tape manufacturer’s instructions and company policy. Range 2.2 dust, dirt, sanding sludge and moisture, oil, wax, grease, silicone. Area to be masked is identified, and the materials and tools are selected to enable the job to be carried out to manufacturer‘s specifications and company policy. Outcome 3 Mask out an area in the motor body industry. Evidence requirements 3.1 Masking is carried out, and materials are used according to manufacturer’s specifications. 3.2 No paint or overspray gets on adjacent areas or fittings. 3.3 No dust from masking gets on freshly applied paintwork. 3.4 Materials and tools are clean and put away after use. 3.5 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.
