NZQA Expiring unit standard 3882 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of colours, paints, and finishing coats used in the motor body industry Level 1 Credits 2 Purpose This theory unit standard is for people who are at preemployment level or who have recently started work in the motor body industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of motor vehicle paint materials, and an understanding of colours and motor vehicle paints. Classification Motor Industry > Vehicle Bodywork Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The following legislation (and subsequent amendments) is applicable to this unit standard and must be followed where applicable: – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 – The Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations 1974 – The Spray Coating Regulations 1962. 2 Company policy includes workplace standards, practices, and procedures, which must comply with current legislation requirements. It is assumed the policy also meets product manufacturers' specifications, recommendations, and standards. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of motor vehicle paint materials. Evidence requirements 1.1 Purposes of paint materials are identified according to paint manufacturers' specifications. Range 1.2 anti-corrosion, protection, reflection, visual, body deadening. Principles of the functions of paint materials are identified according to manufacturers' specifications. Range anti-corrosion paints, undercoats, sealers isolators, anti-chip coatings, underseal, texture coatings, top coats. Outcome 2 Demonstrate an understanding of colours and motor vehicle paints. Evidence requirements 2.1 Colours of the spectrum are identified. Range 2.2 Primary and secondary colours are identified. Range 2.3 primary – red, yellow, blue; secondary – green, orange, violet. Understanding of the use of tinters is identified. Range 2.4 red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. mixing colours, matching colours. Kind of top coats used on motor vehicles are identified according to paint manufacturers' specifications. Range solid colours, clear over solid colours, metallic colours, pearl colours; two pack paints, single pack paints, water borne paints.
