TOPIC
DISCUSSION
Assessment The Deans Plus and Faculty Caucus support the Assessment Day concept. The
Day
Committee will move ahead with planning:
 See if this fits in Student Services in terms of logistics, organizational
responsibility.
 Submit a budget/project proposal to PAC.
 Target population is students who are graduating.
 Sample from spring quarter graduating students (largest population).
 Assess 2 to 3 of the 5 CLOs every year on a rotating schedule.
 Randomly assign each student selected to one CLO assessment.
 Schedule the day on spring quarter professional development day (classes
cancelled) beginning 2009.
 Have two sessions – day and evening.
 Establish penalty for graduates who do not participate -- they do not “walk” at
graduation. Or make it a requirement for graduation?
 Add information on this requirement to admissions materials.
 Determine proctors – adjunct faculty? Staff or faculty released from
professional development day?
 Communicate to faculty via Caucus that if assessment data reveal that the
College has not attained the desired threshold in a CLO, then the next step is
to develop strategies to improve -- including strengthening learning in courses
where the CLO was included.
 Consider these issues:
o Computer literacy, computation literacy, and critical thinking CLOs
are written and/or computerized tests – do not require much labor for
administering or scoring.
o Culture & Commuity CLO assessment can shift to more institutionwide than course-based.
o Communication by Writing and Culture & Community CLOs require
written essay to be assessed by faculty – labor intensive.
