Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
We hope that you and your families are enjoying this beautiful fall
season! Thank you to all of you for your continued support. We are
enjoying teaching your children, and we thank you for sharing them
with us each day. Here's a look ahead to what the students will be
learning over the next two weeks:
Math — Students will be able to collect, organize, categorize, and
graph data. They will also be able to solve put together, take apart,
or compare problems using information displayed in bar graphs and
pictographs.
Reading — With a focus on informational text, students will be able to
ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how
to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. They will also
be able to explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a
text as well as identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text.
Classes will also determine the meaning of words in a text. Students
will also be able to know and use various text features to locate key
facts or information in a text efficiently.
Writing — Second graders will continue to work on their informative
pieces about nutrition. They will be able to expand and rearrange
compound sentences, and they will be able to strengthen writing by
revising and editing. To check and correct spelling, students will
consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries. After
they finalize their pieces, we will move into writing an opinion.
Students will use their knowledge about nutrition to write a letter to
share their opinion about school lunches.
Science — The students will be able to identify and describe natural
features of continents. Students will also learn about the state of
Maryland and the natural features that are in our state’s different
regions.
Social Studies — Students will be able to describe what makes a good
leader. They will use this knowledge as they help vote for student
officers at Ritchie Park. Classes will also be able to identify the
effects of personal choices on themselves, their families, their
school, and their community.
Reminders—
•If you have not yet signed up for a Parent Teacher conference, please
contact your child’s teacher.
•Your child should have brought home a letter about our upcoming Mad
Science workshops on October 23rd (Mrs. Oliva’s class and Mr. Gray’s
class) and October 30th (Ms. Friedland’s class and Mr. Gray’s class).
We would love to have volunteers! Please be sure to send in the $6
and the permission slip, and let us know if you can help out.
•Please remember to send a snack in with your child each day.
you!
Thank
•Parents are invited to visit the school between 9:15 a.m. - 11:30
a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Visitors are asked to enter the
building through the front door, sign in, and obtain a name tag before
proceeding to their child's classroom. Unfortunately, we do not have
the space or supervision for younger brothers and sisters on this day;
therefore, we are respectfully requesting that you do not bring
siblings to school during this time. We will be following our normal
schedule, so this will be a time for quiet observation in the
classrooms. Since students and teachers will be working, we ask that
you please turn off your phones before entering the classroom. If
you're expecting an emergency call, be sure to have your phone on
vibrate. We look forward to seeing you!
