Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director for Assessment and Evaluation leads the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) efforts to improve student learning and educational program outcomes, and works with faculty and administrators from all departments within UNSOM to develop and implement assessment strategies that lead to curricular and program improvement and improvement in the delivery of administrative services supporting UNSOM’s mission. The Director is responsible for leading and shaping assessment processes, managing the simulation center in Reno, keeping abreast of best practices in assessment nationally, and helping to foster a collaborative culture emphasizing continuous improvement of the quality of education at UNSOM. The position reports to the Associate Dean, Medical Education in the Office of Medical Education (OME). 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 65% - Program Evaluation and Assessment Develop and implement educational and administrative assessment plans that result in continuous program improvement Implement assessment strategies for the undergraduate medical education program that will inform curricular decision-making and continuous quality improvement efforts Provide sound analysis of assessment data through the annual Undergraduate Medical Education Assessment report Develop and maintain assessment databases for student learning outcomes, faculty teaching performance, curricular effectiveness and graduate satisfaction Inform the UNSOM academic community of curriculum practices and innovations that lead to improved student learning, program outcomes and administrative services through newsletters, curricular retreats, and committees Provide leadership and direction for evaluation of diversity activities and assessment of the impact of these diversity efforts on the institutional climate for diverse populations Serve as the UNSOM representative to the University Courses and Curriculum committee Serve as an active member of the Office of Academic Affairs leadership team Assign projects and supervise the Coordinator of On-line Assessment 15% - Data Analysis and Reporting Collect, disseminate and analyze institutional data for a variety of reporting requirements at multiple levels, including UNSOM, Division of Health Science (DHS), the University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Direct efforts of the Curriculum Evaluation Group in using institutional assessment data as the basis for quality improvement planning and medical education research projects for dissemination to a broad audience Provide support and leadership to the scholarly activities undertaken in OME 15% - Simulation Center Administration Supervise the Coordinator of the Standardized Patient program and oversee the Clinical Skills Assessment program conducted through the Healthcare Education Simulation Center Position Description – Director, Assessment and Evaluation Page 3 In collaboration with the Director of the Orvis School of Nursing, co-supervise the Simulation Education Coordinator-Reno Oversee management of the Reno Simulation Center budget and accounts (student fees and state budgets) in collaboration with the Simulation Center administrative faculty personnel 5% - Faculty Development Assist the Associate Dean for Faculty Development in assessing need for and nature of professional development activities for academic teaching faculty Conduct faculty/staff training on assessment and on the integration of assessment and course and curricular design 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Director suggests and implements on on-line data collection methodologies used for evaluation and assessment of coursework. After input from faculty as to the content, the Director chooses the appropriate methodology and design of assessment surveys. The position receives input from medical students on the evaluation and curriculum process prior to designing the appropriate instrument for data collection.. The position communicates recommendations on budget, policy, and personnel issues to the Associate Dean. The incumbent consults and recommends to the Associate Dean on resource needs, strategy, and teaching concerns that emerge from the assessment process. Impact: The assessment program must accurately measure the knowledge and skills that UNSOM medical students acquire during their undergraduate medical education program and determine their readiness to graduate and become practicing physicians. The work performed by the Director impacts all academic departments as it is used for all curricular decision-making including individual student performance issues, annual promotion evaluations of faculty and evaluative data for the continued accreditation process of the undergraduate medical education program. Failure to perform affects accreditation, quality of education, and student readiness for graduation. 4.
