1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Director of Information Technology - Medicine serves as the administrative and technical leader
for the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) and the School of Medicine’s Clinical
Practice Plan’s healthcare information technology (IT) systems. The primary roles of the Director
include providing leadership to develop a professional information system and services in medical
education, patient care, clinical care, medical research, and community health.
The Director of IT – Medicine, reporting to the University of Nevada Reno Chief Information Officer,
leads the development and enhancement of a unified information system for the organization and
transformation of IT to achieve UNSOM business goals and objectives. The Director of IT – Medicine
is responsible for overseeing the strategic vision, development, implementation, administration,
finances, and support of the IT services and workforces, which are located in UNSOM at the Reno
and Las Vegas campuses. Included are the support and implementation of an ambulatory practice
management/electronic medical records (PM/EMR) system, a wide range of clinical systems, disaster
recovery/business continuity planning, information security, enterprise applications, academic and
research infrastructure, and IT policies and procedures, etc. The Director of IT - Medicine is a voting
member of the UNSOM Practice Plan Compliance Committee and non-voting member of other
functional committees, including the Northern and Southern Regional Executive Committees. The
position is located in Reno but is expected to make frequent trips to Las Vegas.

60% - IT Operations for UNSOM/UNSOM Clinics
 Establish protocols and procedures for the administration of a broad range of clinical IT
systems
 In collaboration with IT, refine and improve IT policy for UNSOM and UNSOM’s clinical
practice
 Ensure that all clinical IT systems receive appropriate levels of support and are reliable in
achieving their business purpose on a statewide basis
 Understand business strategies and plans for UNSOM clinic practice and UNSOM to identify
and secure systems resources and support appropriate to support those plans
 Ensure proper support for statewide UNSOM Events, Classroom Technologies, Video
Conferencing and other AV needs
 Manage EMR Application Support Team
20% - Electronic Health Record Deployment and Administration
 Manage the electronic health record system
 Oversee and manage the maintenance of the ambulatory PM/EMR system
 Manage all vendor and ancillary providers
10% - Administration and Campus Coordination
 Manage the IT user support managers for UNSOM and the clinical practice
 Ensure collaboration with campus IT and practice plan staff

Maintain a high degree of IT user service for UNSOM faculty and staff and the practice plan
staff for instruction, research, and clinical activities
5% - Fiscal and Operational Planning
 Oversee and coordinate technology purchases
 Develop annual IT budgets for both the School of Medicine and the Clinical Practice Plan
 Ensure that purchases stay within established budgets
5% - Policy Development
 Develop administrative policies for UNSOM and practice plan users in collaboration with
campus IT
 Maintain policies and procedures whereby IT technology is deployed and administered in a
secure, effective, and efficient professional environment
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Assistant Director is responsible for IT technology being deployed and administered in a secure,
effective, and efficient professional environment. The position has independent decision-making
authority for the daily management of the UNSOM and clinical practice information technology
systems and other UNSOM information systems related to clinical practice. The position makes daily
decisions on issues relating to management of unit. The Director researches and makes
recommendations on purchases and budgeting for future technology costs. Collaborates with the CIO
to develop goals and objectives and is consulted on administrative matters, data breaches and other
sensitive issues. Many decisions are made in collaboration with other campus IT senior managers
and stakeholders.
Impact:
Decisions made in the selection and project management of the PM/EMR can impact the success of
the implementation and project. A failure to ensure systems are functioning effectively may result in
increased billing/collections balances or inappropriate release of patient information which could have
significant financial and media implications for the University. Decisions related to Meaningful Use or
other government programs can have a strong financial impact on the clinical operations. Decisions
related to IT infrastructure, project prioritization and planning can have a strong impact on clinical
operations and productivity.

 Information technology operational needs and trends
 Healthcare IT systems needed to sustain a statewide, complex healthcare delivery system

range of constituencies in a diverse clinical and academic community and express complex
technology concepts in a clear, concise manner
