Emails will be automatically filed PI name & contact details: School: Has project been agreed with head (or nominee) of proposed registration school? Professor Antony M Wheatley Medicine Research Centre / group affiliation: Microcirculation Research Laboratory, Disciipline of Physiology Research group / centre website: PI website / link to CV: Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max): If you are already involved in relevant scholarly activities relating to Brazil, please mention them here. The Microcirculation Research Labatory led by Professor Wheatley performs research on the control of blood fow in the microcircualtion of organs and tissues in health and disease. Particular expertise includes intravital fluorescence microscopy and laser Doppler flowmetry. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Title: Role of the innate immune system gastrointestinal permeability: An intravital fluorescence microscopy (IVFM) study Description: The wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract forms a natural barrier which protect the body the external environment including bacteria that live in the gut. In certain diseases, this barrier is broken down, GI permeability is increased and bacteria or bacterial wall elements can enter the body and induce injury. In the current study, the involvement of changes in blood flow in the microcirculation of the GI wall in GI permeability will be studied in a mouse model. Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: NUI Galway has a particular strength in bioimaging and regenerative medicine and immunology . In this project, the student will have the opportunity of performing research with researchers from several disciplines all with an interest in live‐imaging and regeneration and the immune system.
