Cell stress and neuroprotection. Broadly, my interest lies in understanding the pathological changes in the brain underpinning the development of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and investigating ways to convey neuroprotection, which may help to prevent or treat these diseases. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Investigation of the neurotoxic effects of methamphetamine Drug addiction kills millions of people every year and creates misery for tens of millions of others. Methamphetamine is a synthetic derivative of amphetamine, it is a very potent psychomotor stimulant and is well known for its high potential for abuse. It is also known to cause brain damage in drug addicts. The mechanism by which methamphetamine causes the death of brain cells is not well understood. This study will provide a valuable insight into the mechanism of toxicity of methamphetamine in cells in culture, and will considerably advance this area of research.
