NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes February 10, 2015 page 2 2.0 AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS Dave Lonn wanted to publically recognize AHS custodian Gary O’Neil for helping out with custodial duties while they are short handed at Arcata. 3.0 PUBLIC COMMENTS 3.1 District Employees No comments. 3.2 Non-Agenda Items No comments. 3.3 Agenda Items Individuals will have an opportunity to speak on items on the agenda before Board discussion on that item. Individual speakers shall be allowed three minutes to address the Board on each agenda or non-agenda item. The Board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to twenty minutes. 4.0 CONSENT AGENDA Notice to the Public All matters listed under this category are considered to be routine by the Governing Board and will be enacted by one motion on a roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items. AYES NOES ABSENT Dan Collen Dan Johnson Brian Lovell Dana Silvernale Colleen Toste Motion carried, 4-0-1 5.0 INFORMATION ITEMS 5.1 Student Board Representatives MHS Student Representative Natalie Lyell gave an update on winter and spring athletics. Natalie reported that the eighth grade orientation events went well. History Day was this past weekend and was a success. There is a Poetry Café tomorrow in library at lunch. Natalie shared that there is a matchmaker fundraiser going on this week. The Mack Arts Night is this Friday along with Sweet Beats which is held at Azalea Hall. The ArMack Jazz Band will be performing there. Success in Both Worlds is coming up on March 5th. Lastly, March 23-27th is the March Madness Week. AHS Student Representative Emma Zierer shared that junior prom was a success. AHS has a Blood Drive tomorrow. Emma reported on winter and spring sports. Lastly, Emma shared that the leadership team wrote valentines for all students and hung them on the fence for everyone to read. 5.2 Bond Update Executive Director Dave Lonn shared current photos on the AHS Fine Arts building. Dr. Hartley thanked Mr. Lonn for the presentation and all of his hard work on the project. 5.3 LCAP Superintendent Hartley shared that meetings with stakeholders will be held in March. Will review with participants the progress made toward established goals. Stakeholders will help to validate progress, as well as develop strategies for achieving desired outcomes for next three years. LCAP process continues to emerge as model, less about compliance and more focused on relevant planning. 5.4 Career and Technical Education Month – February Dr. Hartley shared that we submitted two Career Education grants yesterday and are hopeful about future efforts working with College of the Redwoods. 5.5 Graduation Update: 2014-15 Mr. Lonn shared communications are taking place with MHS parents and administration to look at holding their graduation at the MHS football stadium. MHS Principal Roger Macdonald held a community meeting to see what interest there was with parents and students. Both groups were predominately interested in holding graduation on campus versus HSU. Site and district administration will work together to make sure it is a quality graduation ceremony and will work out the logistics of holding graduation on separate arenas. Colleen Toste was thrilled to hear this. NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes February 10, 2015 page 4 ACTION ITEMS continued 7.3 Discussion and possible action to approve candidate to serve as the 2015 CSBA Delegate Assembly It was moved by Colleen Toste and seconded by Brian Lovell to approve listed candidate to serve as the 2015 CSBA Delegate Assembly Motion carried, 4-0-1. 7.4 Recommend approval of AHS and MHS French students traveling to France June 23 – June 30, 2015 It was moved by Colleen Toste and seconded by Dana Silvernale to approve AHS and MHS French students traveling to France June 23 – June 30, 2015 French teachers Karen Myers and Davena Bagnall came to elaborate on the trip and answer any questions. Motion carried, 4-0-1. 7.5 Recommend approval to amend the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee Bylaws Dr. Hartley shared that we had zero applicants for the five open seats. When district staff spoke with our attorney to find out what we should do, he noted that the law had changed and by updating our bylaws we can allow members to serve three consecutive terms instead of the previous two. It was moved by Colleen Toste and seconded by Brian Lovell to approve to amend the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee Bylaws Motion carried, 4-0-1. 8.0 COMMUNICATIONS 9.0 ANNOUNCEMENTS 9.1 Study Session, March 10, 2015, 4:30 pm, Arcata High School Library 9.2 Regular Board Meeting, March 10, 2015, 6 pm, Arcata High School Library 10.0 FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS 11.0 COMMENTS FROM SCHOOL SITE PRINCIPALS AHS Principal Dave Navarre shared all of the school events that have been going on in the community this month. Mr. Navarre congratulated student Muriel Ammon who recently won the Creative Writing contest with CATE. MHS Principal Roger Macdonald shared how busy the sites have been and that everyone is looking forward to next week off. SRCHS Principal Nic Collart shared how their eighth grade activities went. Mr. Collart shared how impressive History Day was this past weekend. One SRCHS student, Tyler Sanchez, will be moving onto state. NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes February 10, 2015 page 5 12.0 COMMENTS FROM DIRECTOR OF FISCAL SERVICES Cindy Vickers shared that the Governor’s proposal showed next year looking good. Her staff is busy working on second interims now. 13.0 COMMENTS FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dave Lonn shared that on April 28th our foods program is being audited by the state. Mr. Lonn shared that staff have been meeting to update our current Wellness Policy in preparation of the review. Mr. Lonn invited the Board to participate in the next meeting on March 24th at 1 pm if they would like to be a part of the process. 14.0 COMMENTS FROM SUPERINTENDENT Chris Hartley shared that he was a judge for History Day this past weekend. He was proud at how well our district students have done. 15.0 COMMENTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BOARD Brian Lovell also shared he was a judge at History Day. It was a great opportunity. Brian also attended the AAI Makers Fair and was so impressed at what activities they were doing.. Colleen Toste spoke about the Governance Workshop they all attended. This one was on school finance and was very informative. Ms. Toste shared that out of the 28 high school winners at History Day, 13 of them were from NHUHSD. Dana Silvernale shared that everything continues to look great! Dan Collen congratulated the district for putting in the grants for Career Tech.
