Gray; Jackson Anderson, Cindy Condit, Jennifer Coriell, Todd Curry, Lynn DeMello, Kim Dennig, Brian Gerving, Doug Johnson, Maureen Kiritsy, Jennifer Knight, Jason Lewis, Sue Moore, Tammy Pires, Canyon Robins, and Blake Russell 2.0 AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS MHS Principal Roger Macdonald took a moment to congratulate the MHS Cross Country, Boys and Girls, teams for their first place HDN wins. This is first time in the school’s history for both teams. Coach Jason Lewis spoke about their accomplishments and introduced a few of the athletes. 2.1 Board Recognition Superintendent Chris Hartley thanked Mr. Collen for his service to the district. Mr. Collen has served on the Board for eight years. Dr. Hartley shared that Mr. Collen did his student teaching at Arcata High, has had three children graduate from AHS, and has served as Board President for four years of his term. One of Dan’s most significant achievements was serving as Board President during the Measure Q campaign. Mr. Collen will be missed by the board, administration, staff, and students. Thanked Mr. Collen for always thinking of students first, being community minded, and a servant leader Dan Collen shared his experiences with the district and with Arcata High School. Dan thanked the community for letting him serve the district these past eight years. 3.0 PUBLIC COMMENTS 3.1 District Employees Cindy Condit – AHS teacher – Ms. Condit spoke tonight about the loss of the Arcata High School snake in the science room. Ms. Condit felt that the snake was a benefit to the students. Over the past summer, Ms. Condit shared that the district got rid of the snake due to a flood in the classroom that was believed to have been caused by the snake. Ms. Condit is discouraged that she lost this teaching tool. Ms. Condit felt like she was never given an opportunity to address the issue nor be a part of the process of finding a new home for the snake. Ms. Condit felt this was reactive, not proactive. 3.2 Non-Agenda Items Canyon Robins – AHS student – Canyon shared a copy of a petition that almost 200 students signed to have the snake returned to the AHS science classroom. Canyon stated that the snake’s absence was noticed by students after returning this fall. Canyon shared that there was a recent article in the school newspaper, The Pepperbox, addressing the issue. Canyon shared that students would like to see the snake returned to the classroom. NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes November 10, 2015 page 3 PUBLIC COMMENTS continued 3.3 Agenda Items Individuals will have an opportunity to speak on items on the agenda before Board discussion on that item. Individual speakers shall be allowed three minutes to address the Board on each agenda item. The Board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to twenty minutes. Kim Dennig spoke about Item 7.13. As a former classified staff member she feels that the wages for the aides are inadequate in order to support a household. Ms. Dennig shared that she can no longer afford to hold her job. 4.0 CONSENT AGENDA Notice to the Public All matters listed under this category are considered to be routine by the Governing Board and will be enacted by one motion on a roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items. Gray shared how well the homecoming festivities went. C.J. distributed a copy of the first newspaper published this year. C.J. gave an update on fall sports. There will be a Fall Sports Award ceremony on November 18. The Blood Drive will be next week. C.J. shared that winter sports started up yesterday. The AAI has a performance, November 12-14. Lastly, C.J. stated that overall students are grinding away just trying to get to Thanksgiving Break. MHS Student Representative Jayclyn Dean also gave an update on fall sports. The Interact Club has raised $1,500 for Make-A-Wish foundation and Miranda’s Rescue. Jaycyn shared that MHS hosted Japanese students for ten days. Students came to school with our students and stayed with students and their families. Lastly, ASB is doing the Coats for the Cold Drive along with a Blood Drive next week. 5.2 Bond Update Executive Director Dave Lonn shared an update on the AHS Fine Arts facility. There is power now. All the rooms are close to completion with just a few jobs to wrap up. Next week the stage lighting and rigging company will be hooking up. There is some final concrete to be poured out front. Dave Lonn thanked Todd Curry for all the oversight on the sound system. Brian Lovell had heard that Orchestra is being housed in the library at this time. Mr. Lonn shared that they were no longer able to use the wrestling room. Due to student safety concerns, Mr. Lonn shared that the students were able to use the library in the mean time. 5.3 LCAP Update Dr. Hartley shared there will be the first LCAP stakeholder meeting of the year on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. This first meeting will be to discuss student achievement, school climate and common core standards. AHS Principal Dave Navarre also thanked Dan Collen for his tenure with the Board. Thanked everyone for their help with making the Orchestra move from the wrestling room to the Library until the Fine Arts building is completed. SRCHS Principal Nic Collart also thanked Dan Collen for all of his support with Six Rivers and himself as an administrator. Nic wished everyone a good break! 12.0 COMMENTS FROM DIRECTOR OF FISCAL SERVICES Cindy Vickers shared her appreciation of working with Mr. Collen. She shared how much support he has given over the years. 13.0 COMMENTS FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dave Lonn thanked Todd Curry again for all his work on the Fine Arts sound system. Dave also thanked the admin team at AHS for their patience with the project. Lastly, Dave shared his appreciation of Mr. Collen. 14.0 COMMENTS FROM SUPERINTENDENT Chris Hartley welcomed the new board members and reminded them that they’ll be sworn in at the December meeting. Thanked everyone for their hard work and wished everyone a great vacation. 15.0 COMMENTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BOARD Brian Lovell shared his enjoyment of working with Dan Collen these past two years. Brian thanked Dave Lonn for his hard work on the Fine Arts building. Dana Silvernale thanked Dan Collen for making her feel welcome and comfortable on the Board. She appreciates the way he facilitated meetings and negotiations. Lastly, Dana welcomed the new members. Colleen Toste thanked the faculty, students and staff for attending the meeting tonight. Colleen shared what a class act Dan has been to work with on the Board. It has been an honor for her to serve with Dan. Dan Collen congratulated all the athletes for their success this fall. Dan shared his appreciation of Mr. Lonn and the work of the district for their efforts on the Measure Q projects. Dan also thanked Dr. Hartley and Dr. Richards for their guidance as Superintendents during his time on the board.
