NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes December 9, 2014 page 2 2.0 AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS 2.1 National Council of Teachers of English honors MHS teacher Anne Sahlberg as a "High School Teacher of Excellence” MHS Principal Roger Macdonald introduced MHS study Jasmine Allard who spoke about Ms. Sahlberg as a teacher. Ms. Sahlberg spoke about the award she had received. 3.0 ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS 3.1 Election of President of the Board of Trustees Dr. Hartley opened up nominations for President. It was moved by Dan Johnson and seconded by Brian Lovell to nominate Dan Collen as President for the upcoming year. No other nominations were made. Motion carried, 4-0-1. (Collen abstained) 3.2 Election of Clerk of the Board of Trustees Dan Collen opened up nominations for Clerk. It was moved by Dana Silvernale and seconded by Brian Lovell to nominate Colleen Toste as Clerk for the upcoming year. No other nominations were made. Motion carried, 5-0-0. 3.3 Establish Day and Time for Board Meetings It was moved by Dana Silvernale and seconded by Colleen Toste to continue Board meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Regular meeting time will continue to be 6 pm. Motion carried, 5-0-0. 3.4 Appoint Board member to be a voting representative for the NHUHSD on the County Committee on School District Organization It was moved by Brian Lovell and seconded by Dana Silvernale to nominate Colleen Toste as a voting representative for the NHUHSD on the County Committee on School District Organization Motion carried, 5-0-0. 3.5 Appoint two Board members to serve on the NHUHSD Athletic Committee It was moved by Colleen Toste and seconded by Dana Silvernale to nominate Dan Collen and Brian Lovell to serve on the NHUHSD Athletic Committee Motion carried, 5-0-0. NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes December 9, 2014 page 3 4.0 PUBLIC COMMENTS 4.1 District Employees Jo Ann Moore – AHS Teacher – Ms. Moore came tonight to share her support for the classified staff. Anne Sahlberg – MHS Teacher –Ms. Sahlberg shared her support for the classified staff. They are a vital part of our schools. Doug Johnson – AHS Teacher – Mr. Johnson came to share his support for classified staff. Jennifer Berube – AHS Librarian – Ms. Berube also came to share her support for the classified staff tonight as well. Sheri Myer – MHS Teacher – Ms. Myer came to support the classified staff. Lynn DeMello – CSEA President – Ms. DeMello thanked certificated staff for their support this evening. Steve Nystrom – MHS Teacher – Mr. Nystrom shared his support for the classified staff. 5.0 4.2 Non-Agenda Items No comments. 4.3 Agenda Items Individuals will have an opportunity to speak on items on the agenda before Board discussion on that item. Individual speakers shall be allowed three minutes to address the Board on each agenda or non-agenda item. The Board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to twenty minutes. AYES NOES ABSENT Dan Collen Dan Johnson Brian Lovell Dana Silvernale Colleen Toste Motion carried, 5-0-0 NHUHSD Governing Board Minutes December 9, 2014 page 4 6.0 INFORMATION ITEMS 6.1 Student Board Representatives MHS Student Representative Ryan Sotelo gave an update on athletics. Ryan shared that the canned food drives at MHS have generated over 1,800 cans. MHS is also holding a Toy Drive and Sock Drive. Ryan shared that Winter Formal is January 24th. AHS Student Representative Emma Zierer shared that AHS senior Sophie Northern signed with HSU for girls’ basketball. AHS ASB is currently doing their Change Drive. Lastly, this Friday night is the Arts Arcata event. 6.2 Instructional Coach Update District Instructional coaches and teachers Jennifer Rosebrook, Danielle Lehman, Steve Hoffman, Suzie McCray and Rachel Watson shared what their role as Instructional Coaches is. The coaches have attended trainings on Common Core and also participated in trainings on ways to develop a coaching program for our district. Dr. Hartley shared how pleased he has been with the coaches. Their leadership as teachers demonstrates how relevant professional development can be delivered to small groups and one on one. Dr. Hartley has also been pleased with the teaching staff being so receptive to the new coaching program. 6.3 Common Core Update: Math Mr. Macdonald, Mr. Navarre and Mr. Collart shared that district math department have been thoughtful and deliberate about the decision to go integrated. The consensus of team was to move forward with an integrated approach in math for Common Core. Nic Collart shared that the exciting part is that now that we have made a decision we can move forward with the instructional planning. Dave Navarre shared that it is great to have buy in from all stakeholders because of the process. 6.4 Bond Update Executive Director Dave Lonn shared an update on progress of Fine Arts Facility project. Mr. Lonn shared photos of construction in progress. 6.5 LCAP 7.0 PUBLIC HEARING AND DISCUSSION 8.0 ACTION ITEMS 8.1 Approval of Changes in Certificated and Classified Personnel It was moved by Colleen Toste and seconded by Brian Lovell to approve Changes in Certificated and Classified Personnel Motion carried, 4-0-1. As a district, we are planning for increased special education costs with more students attending non-public schools. We are also planning for the Affordable Healthcare Act. Lastly, we are looking into Prop 2 which limits the reserves that districts can hold. MHS Principal Roger Macdonald spoke about how much community service our students put in this time of the year. 13.0 14.0 SRCHS Principal Nic Collart wanted to share that SRCHS student Alison Silver is now a published author. She will be doing a book signing at Trinidad School this Friday. COMMENTS FROM DIRECTOR OF FISCAL SERVICES COMMENTS FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dave Lonn shared that Bus Garage Clerk Penni Nicoll will be retiring this month. We want to wish her well and thank her for her service.
