Mathieson News Letter Volume 3, Issue 1 October 2014 Social Studies Writing/ Spelling Students will learn about the American Revolution, chapter 9, specifically about the Declaration of Independence. People your child will learn about are: Thomas Jefferson, Phillis Wheatley, and George Washington. These next few weeks, we as a class will focus on strengthening our personal narratives. We will continue to focus on the writing process, and the necessary steps we as writers need to take for our writing to be clear and strong (Pre-writing, drafting, editing/peer editing, final drafts and publishing). Students will continue to work on their first and second drafts (writing is an on-going process: always room to improve!). Math Our focus in math will still be Module 2, Fractions. Students will work on: converting fractions, identifying equivalent fractions, and representing factions with decimals. Students are given the opportunity to generate discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach th to further their understanding. *Math test October 13 * Literacy We are working on reading nonfiction stories, focusing specifically on text features and structures. We will continue to study the pieces that make a nonfiction story so interesting and challenging. Students will focus on finding books they enjoy to read, and via interactive read–a-louds, students will learn skills to grow as a reader. (We will read: Aarowhawk, Women Explorers, Lizards, Henry’s Freedom Box, A Warmer World, and many more). These activities will be done in class during our writing block. We as a class will continue our grammar instructionthis will make their writing stronger and clearer. Science Students will work on chapter 2 in our Life Science book; identifying ecosystems and the interactions within them. Students will read, take notes, and learn new vocabulary during this chapter. Closer to conferences I will send reminders for the day and time that you signed up for.
