Mathieson News Letter Volume 6, Issue 1 November 2015 Social Studies Students will be learning about the US in the 1800’s, specifically forming the government (Chp. 10). Students will read about the Constitution being ratified and important people who helped shape our nation’s history. Math Our focus in math is Module 4, Adding Fractions and Order of Operations. Students will work on: adding fractions with similar and different denominators, and using the order of operations to calculate the answer to a given equation. Students are given the opportunity to generate discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach to further their understanding. Literacy These two weeks we will focus our learning on the author’s purpose within nonfiction stories. Writing/ Spelling We are working on expository writing (writing that informs). These next few weeks will be the introduction and beginning stages of our expository writing. We will continue our work using the writing process steps including: Pre-writing, drafting, editing/peer editing, final drafts and publishing. Writing is an ongoing process: always room to improve. *Students will begin to work on an expository writing piece of their choosing. It will be research based and will involve a presentation. (More info to come) Spelling: Students are working on word sort packets and activities. These activities will be done in class during our writing block. We as a class will continue our grammar instructionthis will make their writing stronger and clearer. Nonfiction during reading will correspond well with writing, as expository writing informs, and nonfiction books give information. I encourage students to begin reading nonfiction during class and at home. Our science instruction will focus on Chapter 3, the big idea: “How does Energy Move in an Ecosystem?” Reminder: Remember to work toward the 40 Book Challenge! an article, and you can have multiple articles in a Rocument. They will exchange the song lyrics with the 10 Amendments from The Bill of Rights. Students also have the opportunity to perform their parody to the class for extra credit.
