Mathieson News Letter Volume 1, Issue 1 September 2015 Social Studies Writing/ Spelling We will begin our learning of the American Revolution learning this week and will continue for the next month or so. Students will learn about the building of our nation and about important people such as: George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. These next few weeks, we as a class will focus on writing personal narratives. We will focus on the writing process, and the necessary steps we as writers need to take for our writing to be clear and strong (Prewriting, drafting, editing/peer editing, final drafts and publishing). Our Final Narrative Essay will be due around the end of September. Math Our focus in math will still be focused around Module 1, Place Value and Multiplication. Students will work on: identifying place value of numbers, multiplying using new strategies, and practicing their fact fluency. Students will generate discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach to further their understanding. **Our Math Module 1 Test will be: Sept 17, 2015 ** Literacy We are working on reading as much as possible. We are working on exploring ourselves as readers and activating our schema as much as possible to make connections to the stories we hear and read. Students will focus on finding books they enjoy to read, and via interactive read–a-louds, students will learn skills to grow as a reader. (We will read: My Life In Dog Years, Old Henry, The Hard Times Jar, and A Day’s Work). Students will begin working on word sorts to strengthen their spelling abilities via Words Their Way curriculum. We as a class will continue our grammar instructionthis will make their writing stronger and clearer. Science In science we are working within our Life Science book. Students will continue classifying living things, specifically animals- invertebrates and vertebrates. Closer to conferences I will send reminders for the day and time that you signed up for.
