Mathieson News Letter Volume 15, Issue 1 May 2016 Social Studies **Chapter 14 test on Friday May 6th. Writing/ Spelling Our next social studies focus will be on Chapter 15, War and Reconstruction, studying the Civil War. We will learn specifically about: North and South, slavery, and how the North won this war. Students will begin working on a poetry book and begin exploring multiple types of poetry in written form. Math Our focus in math will be Module 9, multiplying fractions and converting to find a given mass. Students will work on: multiplying fractions by whole numbers, mixed numbers, and other fractions. Students will also focus on converting from ounces to pounds and vice versa. Students are given the opportunity to generate discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach to further their understanding. **Our Math Assessment on Module 9 will be on 5/10/16 Literacy We will slow down the reading process to truly understand the author’s words and meaning within poetry. Students will read and re-read for meaning while asking questions for clarity. Students will actively listen to poetry and create their own poetry throughout this unit. I will continue to work with students in small groups or individually (working on different reading strategies, or doing running records to see which reading level they may currently be reading). Spelling: Students are working on word sort packets and activities. Some activities may come home as homework (sorting activities), but most will be done in class during our writing block. We as a class will continue our grammar instructionspecifically working with homophones and homonyms. Up next will be adverbs! Science Science instruction will focus on our Earth and Moon. (Chapter 1 Earth Science) Students will work to answer the big question: “How do Earth and its Moon create cycles?”. Students will learn new vocabulary words such as: rotation, eclipse, apparent motion, etc. and follow the moon’s cycle for personal observation and learning.
