Social Studies
**Chapter 14 test on Friday May 6th.
Writing/ Spelling
Our next social studies focus will be on Chapter 15,
War and Reconstruction, studying the Civil War. We
will learn specifically about: North and South, slavery,
and how the North won this war.
Students will begin working on a poetry book and begin
exploring multiple types of poetry in written form.
Math
Our focus in math will be Module 9, multiplying
fractions and converting to find a given mass. Students
will work on: multiplying fractions by whole numbers,
mixed numbers, and other fractions. Students will also
focus on converting from ounces to pounds and vice
versa. Students are given the opportunity to generate
discussion, use manipulatives and rally coach to further
their understanding.
**Our Math Assessment on Module 9 will be on 5/10/16
Literacy
We will slow down the reading process to truly
understand the author’s words and meaning within
poetry. Students will read and re-read for meaning
while asking questions for clarity. Students will actively
listen to poetry and create their own poetry throughout
this unit. I will continue to work with students in small
groups or individually (working on different reading
strategies, or doing running records to see which
reading level they may currently be reading).
Spelling: Students are working on word sort packets
and activities. Some activities may come home as
homework (sorting activities), but most will be done in
class during our writing block.
We as a class will continue our grammar instructionspecifically working with homophones and homonyms.
Up next will be adverbs!
Science
Science instruction will focus on our Earth and Moon.
(Chapter 1 Earth Science) Students will work to answer
the big question: “How do Earth and its Moon create
cycles?”. Students will learn new vocabulary words
such as: rotation, eclipse, apparent motion, etc. and
follow the moon’s cycle for personal observation and
learning.
Reminders:
*Please have your child double check their
band/orchestra schedule. They have many concerts
coming up, so remind them to practice and check their
schedules!
