Miss Kay’s Fifth Grade News September 4, 2015 Dress Code Mrs. Allen asked the fifth grade teachers to have a talk with the kids about dress code this week. At Spencer Loomis, no spaghetti straps are permitted unless they are underneath another shirt, and the hem of all shorts must be at least halfway to the knee. The class is also practicing their skills while reading Out of my Mind, a novel about a young girl with a severe form of cerebral palsy. She is very bright but no one knows because she is unable to communicate. Math Reading This week in math we reviewed place value concepts into the hundred millions. As we set up routines, structures, and expectations for the reading workshop portion of the day, the class is also reviewing some important aspects of the reading process. For example, we have discussed various genres, summarizing, responding to text in writing, activating schema, and literary conversations. Social Studies See if your child can tell you what it means to say, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” The students have learned about Paul Revere’s ride, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Miss Kay’s Fifth Grade News September 4, 2015 Language Arts I took this week to introduce the students to Words their Way homework. We did a practice unit together so they would understand what is expected each week. The word study homework will include lots of sorting tasks, writing, and a practice test. Actual lists will come home next week. Two groups will begin on Thursday and one group will begin on Wednesday.
