Miss Kay’s Fifth Grade News February 5, 2016 Literacy Math This week in literacy we discussed dynamic/round characters, static/flat characters, and various types of conflicts in fiction. These include person vs. nature, person vs. society, person vs. person, and person vs. self. Frequently these conflicts overlap and many stories have multiple types of conflicts, especially as students read more and more complicated and interesting plots. We have finished Module 6. You may have noticed that the test for Module 6 was graded a bit differently than previous tests in regards to reducing to lowest terms. The district math committee has recommended that we not assess students on reducing to lowest terms since it is not a fifth grade objective. Therefore I will continue to teach reducing to make middle school math easier, but that skill will not be part of our tests. The class is also doing a fun, quick author letter project. I have reviewed letter format, paragraph structure, and revision strategies. Each student is writing to an author of his or her choice. We will mail them, and I expect some of the students will receive a response; you never know who will write back! Science The class has learned about physical and chemical changes, we did an informal assessment for this final chapter, and we will be moving back to social studies very soon!
