Miss Kay’s Fifth Grade News September 18, 2015 Reading The class loved Out of my Mind, our first shared novel. I used some chapters as mentor texts, and students practiced their reading skills and strategies independently with other chapters. Students did a great job with Stop and Jot, a strategy in which they briefly stop reading to jot down a question, response, connection, or other thought about the text. The first round of Book Talks is finished! The class did a nice job recommending books to their classmates. In October each student will present another book to the class and one more item will be added to the criteria for success! Math Excellent job on the first math test! The class was very proud of their Module 1 test, and I have to say I was impressed as well. Super job! Social Studies This week in social studies our simulations took us through the battles of Lexington and Concord. I am very pleased with the writing the kids have done after their activities! The first one was a newspaper article on the Boston Massacre, then they wrote a letter to Aunt Bertha about the Lexington and Concord battles. The writing has a great deal of voice, description, and emotion. Writing/English The class continues to enjoy and analyze examples of feature articles. Miss Kay’s Fifth Grade News September 18, 2015 We have determined that feature articles examine a topic in an unusual or unique way, such as Animals that Build, or The Life and Times of the Peanut. Students are doing a bit of brainstorming and sharing of topics of their own daily, and we will work on that more intensely next week. Coming Up *Feature articles *Simulations of American Revolution *Fractions *Tuesday, September 22: Picture Day *Friday, September 25: Institute Day *Monday and Tuesday, September 28-29 will be our MAP testing days *Wednesday, September 30: Early release
