Catholic School Learning Plan for Notre Dame Secondary School Annual Progress Report Shared Priorities: Creating Catholic Conditions for Well-Being, Learning and Leading Outcomes: By the end of 2016 we will see a decrease in peer conflicts and the number of students struggling with anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: Through initiatives with the Unity Group and Rising Stars, students have been provided with opportunities to express themselves and gain an increased awareness of important issues such as bullying. Teachers have been provided with PD to help them identify students who are experiencing mental health challenges. This PD will continue in September. Our child and youth worker has held regular small group sessions for grade 9 boys, grade 10 and 12 girls who have struggled with anxiety. The focus of these groups is to build resilience and confidence through coping strategies and conversation. In September we plan to increase awareness of mental health issues to all our students through classroom visits and assemblies. We will see an increase in the number of students who indicate they are aware of the online reporting system. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: Students are reminded about the on-line reporting system during assemblies, announcements, and through their homeroom teachers. Our NPU officers will also conduct homeroom visits in September to all grade 9 classes to and visits to senior classes in the spring. The purpose of these visits is to build relationships with the students so that they are comfortable talking to our officers, and also to increase awareness of the risks and consequences of inappropriate communication via social media. We will increase promotion of the virtues recognition program in our school so that students become more familiar with these Shared Priorities: Building Collaborative Practices Through Inquiry Outcomes: By the end of 2016 we will see an increase in collaborative practices in our school community that will enhance student (and teacher) engagement and efficacy. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: Departments are currently working on various collaborative inquiries to increase student learning. Our Assessment and Evaluation Committee will collaborate in the fall to review CPTs, and teachers of the same courses will continue to meet to ensure consistency and share best practices. Teachers are continuing to implement learning goals and success criteria in their classes, which invite students to reflect on their learning. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: Our Creating Pathways to Success Team is working with parent, students, and teachers to ensure that the school community is familiar with the usefulness of My Blueprint. Students will have aspects of My Blueprint completed as part of their courses, to help them in the process of self-discovery. We continue to provide teacher PD regarding resources available for students in ARD and ELL, and strategies for Universal Design for Learning so that every student’s potential is realized, and we ensure that they develop into life-long learners. Shared Priorities: Knowing the Learner through Assessment Outcomes: By the end of 2016, we will have implemented increased metacognitive opportunities in our classes to ensure that students are becoming reflective, responsible learners. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: In September, all grade 9 homerooms will teach their students about the characteristics of effective work habits and learning skills. Students will be asked to complete a self-assessment of these skills and habits and various points through the semester, and the teacher will provide descriptive feedback to help students develop a better understanding of areas for improvement. We will provide teacher PD on descriptive feedback in the fall, and continue to provide teachers opportunities to share best practices regarding assessment for/ as learning in their classes. Teachers will also incorporate more diagnostic assessments at the outset of their courses to identify student learning needs, and provide individualized support. Outcome Progress Comments 6/3/2015: In September we will develop a cross-curricular literacy strategy. Students in all classes will also be taught how to approach inferential multiple choice questions (C.L.U.E. strategy). Literacy committee teachers, will also co-teach applied level English classes on a regular basis throughout the semester to introduce scaffolded approaches to teaching / learning literacy skills. Teachers are working to align the math curriculum with EQAO expectations. We are completing diagnostic assessments at the outset of the semester to identify gaps in student learning and areas for remediation. There are also after school numeracy classes provided to help prepare students for the EQAO assessment.
