We are delighted to begin the month of May
with a celebration of the distinctiveness of
Catholic Education. This year, Catholic Education Week takes place from May 2 - May
6, 2016. During this week, the Catholic community celebrates the unique and distinctive
contribution that Catholic schools make to our
students, our community and our province.
Catholic Education Week is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the mission of our Catholic schools as they strive to integrate the
Gospel values of Jesus Christ in every aspect
of the school’s life and curriculum. This
year’s theme is Opening Doors of Mercy.
Please refer to the Catholic Education Week
pamphlet or the schedule included in this
newsletter for a calendar of planned activities
at our school.
Virtue of the Month
This month we will celebrate the virtue of
‘acceptance’. One of the great wonders of the
world we live in is that no two people are exactly alike. God breaks the mold every time,
and that is a fantastic fact of life.
An accepting person….
 Is friendly and open to all God’s people,
regardless of age, beliefs, gender, culture or
ability
 Sees the positive traits in all people even
if she or he disagrees with them

Principal’s Message
As some of you may already know, it was
announced at the Board meeting on April
29th, that I will be leaving St. Edith Stein
School at the end of June to continue my
journey at St. Albert of Jerusalem
School. As this school year draws to a
close, please know that I am truly grateful
that God has allowed me the privilege of
serving this community, filled with a highly
dedicated staff; respectful students, devoted volunteers, and supportive parents over
the past five years!
Although it is with a heavy heart that I am
leaving such an amazing community, I am
excited about the new challenge which lies
ahead. I am genuinely grateful for your
support over the past five years as we
worked together to make St. Edith Stein
School a vital force in the life and development of your children.
It is with great pleasure that I proudly hand
over the community to Mr. M. Araman who
will serve as principal at St. Edith Stein in
September. He has a wealth of knowledge
and expertise to bring to our school. I am
confident that all of you will continue to
welcome and support him as you did me.
Once again, thank you, thank you, thank
you. It has truly been a pleasure!
Mrs. C. Boulanger
Punctuality
School begins at 9:00am in the morning
and 1:00pm in the afternoon. Students
should arrive at school on time to line up
with their class. Late students that enter
through the front doors must stop at the
office to pick up a late slip before going to their class. These
‘lates’ are recorded on their attendance record. Punctuality
is a student expectation for all students of St. Edith Stein.

NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
THURSDAY, MAY 19 @ 6:30pm IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY.
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!
A Mother’s Day Prayer for Moms
A Mother’s love is something that
no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion, of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may,
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away…
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking…
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems
A many splendored miracle,
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God’s tender guiding hand.

standards of modesty, neatness and good
taste in their attire within our Catholic
school. Short shorts, excessively tight shorts, halter/crop
tops are not considered appropriate for the school environment. Tank tops for girls and boys are not permitted.
Shirts need to be an appropriate length without violent or
inappropriate language or symbols. Sunglasses, hats and
visors are for outdoor wear. Sunscreen is a good protection
from the harmful effects of exposure to the sun.
School Walkathon in Support of St. Josephine
Bakhita Parish “Walk of Hope”
St. Josephine Bakhita Parish is currently in the process of developing plans for the design of the new
parish church. The parish is thrilled to have passed
the million dollar mark in fundraising for the building fund, but more is still needed before the archdiocese will allow construction of the new church
building to begin.
This is the parish that serves our school community
and supports our children in preparing for and celebrating the Sacraments. To that end, our school will
be holding a walkathon on Friday, June 17th, from
9am to about 10:30am, to help the parish raise
money for the building fund. Parents are welcome
to participate with their children, and will be needed to supervise the walking route. Additional information and pledge sheets will be sent home closer
to this date. Please mark this date on your calendar, and thank you in advance for your support!

CONFIRMATION
Congratulations to our grade seven and
eight students who received the sacrament
of Confirmation during the month of April.
In this sacrament, students are blessed
with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
(wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude,
knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord). At
Baptism, we receive these gifts and they
are freely given to us to help us live lives
as followers of Jesus. The gifts are sealed
within us at confirmation. They help us respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit,
make good choices and serve God and
others.
Students, may you always know the peace
of God, that passes understanding and
wisdom. May you be guided by His Holy
hand, and possess his heart and nature as
you grow into the wonderful person He intended you to be! May you always know
His Love, His Mercy, His Faithfulness, His
Abundance, & His Grace...in all the things
you do, and places that you go!

EQAO Update
EQAO Update
The grade 3 and 6 EQAO assessments measure how well
students have met the expectations in the Ontario Curriculum
Grades 1-8.
St. Edith Stein School, the grade 3 students will write the
EQAO assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics on
May 25th, 26th, and 27th. The grade 6 students will write on
May 31, June 1st and 2nd. Please keep this important time
frame in mind when you are planning family trips or appointments. It is important that all grade 3 and 6 students be in
attendance for the assessments.
Students will be required to complete three test booklets: one
mathematics booklet, one reading
booklet and one writing booklet.
The types of questions in the booklets will be familiar to your
child as they are based on the work your child has been completing throughout the year. Sample questions can be viewed
on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com.
We ask that you make every effort to avoid holidays during
these days and to try to make sure your children are in attendance each day during the assessment. In advance, we appreciate your efforts in scheduling appointments around this block
of time. The EQAO assessment results help us to continue to
improve upon the quality of Catholic education offered to your
children.
It is also important not to stress the student unnecessarily
about the EQAO assessments. Please attempt to keep routines intact as much as possible during the testing period so
that no undue stress is placed upon the students. You can
help prepare for the testing by talking to your child and helping
to reduce the anxiety related to any type of testing situation.
Ensure your child has enough sleep, eats a nutritious breakfast
and is well hydrated.

Congratulations to all of the raffle winners who won Easter chocolates and stuffies!
CURRICULUM CORNER
An important part of our school’s Collaborative Inquiry this year has been implementing the use of
the UMCL model. This model is essential in planning out solutions to questions and inquiries in
any subject matter. Please support your child in using this effective model when completing assigned work at home. This will emulate the problem solving process being used at school.
Step One (Understand the problem)

Restate the problem; identify information; talk about the problem
Step Two (Make a Plan)

Relate the problem to similar problems; consider possible strategies; select a strategy, discuss
ideas with others to clarify which strategy would work best
Step Three (Carry Out the Plan)

Execute the chosen strategy; do necessary calculations, monitor success, revise strategies as
necessary; draw pictures; used words and symbols; share results
Step Four (Look Back at the Solution)

Check ther reasonableness of the answer; review the method used; did it make sense?; consider extensions or variations, describe how the solution was reached ; explain the solution
HEALTH CANADA: HEALTHY EATING
Spring is finally here! It’s the perfect time of year to brush up on your healthy eating knowledge and encourage students to
make some healthier eating choices. Healthy eating is important to good health. Food nourishes your body and gives you
energy to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Eating the right foods can also help reduce your risk of many chronic diseases.
On the Health Canada website, at www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/part/tb-bo/index-eng.php, you will find a Healthy
Eating Toolbox filled with a wide variety of resources, tools, and tips on promoting healthy eating. Included there is a guide
for children, youth and adults to track their food intake to make sure they’re meeting the recommendations in Canada‟s
Food Guide. The My Food Guide Servings Tracker can be found at: www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/tracksuivi/index-eng.php Information can also be found at www.HealthyCanadians.gc.ca/EatWell. For example, the section on
food labels (www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/eating-nutrition/label-etiquetage/index-eng.php) includes interactive quizzes and
tools with information about how to use nutrition information to make more informed choices. Another good site for nutrition information is the “Healthy Life” channel on the Canadian Living website, produced in collaboration with Health
Canada. www.canadianliving.com/health/__healthy_life/). The site provides tasty recipes, informative articles and videos,
top nutrition advice and a fun, skill-testing quiz.
FIRE AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS
As part of DPCDSB’s safety protocol, every school is required to hold
three fire drills and one lockdown drill each term in order to familiarize
students with procedures to follow in the case of emergency. Our
students have demonstrated excellent skill during these practices.
Please continue discussions at home regarding the reasons for these drills.
REPORT CARDS
It is hard to believe, but the school year is quickly coming to a
close. The second term report cards will be distributed to students on Wednesday, June 28th. Even though the summer
weather is approaching, students are encouraged to continue
working hard and set goals to achieve academic success.
Children learn best when schools and families work as a team.
Please contact your child’s teacher with any concerns about
your child’s progress. It is never too late in the year to do so.
Thank you for your unwavering support!
