Catholic Education Week May 1-6th
Pope Francis has declared 2016 a “Holy Year of Mercy” as a way for the
Catholic church to “make more evident, its mission to be a witness of
mercy”. The Holy Year began on December 8, 2015 and will be celebrated until November 20, 2016. Throughout the year, there will be a series
of jubilee celebrations on the theme of mercy for teenagers, deacons,
the sick and disabled, prisoners, catechists and clergy.

As well, Pope Francis opened the Vatican’s Holy Door on December 8th.
The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness which is
the main focus of a Holy Year. The theme God’s mercy is illustrated in
fifteen of the sixteen bronze panels that make up the Vatican Door. There are seven such Holy
Doors in the world, including one in Quebec City.
Catholic Education Week 2016 combines both the theme of mercy and the act of opening
doors of reconciliation, mercy and forgiveness to all around us.

DATE CHANGE—School Council
Please be advised that the School Council meeting has been changed to:
TUESDAY, APRIL 19th 7:00 p.m. at
St. Dominic Church
SCHOOL HOURS
School begins each day at 8:30 a.m.
Punctuality is the responsibility of both
child and parent. Arriving late disrupts
your child’s learning and the commencement of lessons. Please support us in our
efforts to have a great start each day!
STUDENT ABSENCES
We thank you for your continued support in following
the “Reporting Absences” procedure. For families new
to the school, you can reach the school answering
service by calling (905) 278-9771 please leave the
following information:
 Date of absence
 Student's full name
 Grade level and teacher
 Reason for absence
 Date of return
Please continue to call each day that your child is absent.
When your child returns to school, please provide the
teacher with a note regarding the specific reason for the
absence.
PLEASE LABEL BELONGINGS
Please label your child’s belongings so that when hats,
mittens, gloves, boots or jackets go astray they can be
found. Our LOST & FOUND table grows daily with lost
items that have not been retrieved. All items not claimed
will be donated to charity.
April Virtue of:
I am a loving person.
I show my love by doing kind things and saying
kind words.
I treat others as I want to be treated.
I love God and all that God has created,
including myself.
God has given us many guidelines and examples of how
to live our lives. He sent his Son Jesus to make sure
that we could see what life could be like. Jesus made
one lesson clear above all other lessons—the lesson of
love. Love is not about us—it is about forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of the other. That’s
what Jesus did—he forgot about himself on purpose.
He chose to give up his life for the good of others—us!
Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes
prayer and concentration to get used to making little
sacrifices for the good of others. Making little sacrifices
on purpose so that others will have a bit of food, a bit of
shelter, a bit of peace, a bit of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit
of friendship.
TERS
VISITOR AND PARENT SIGN IN
Please do not escort students directly to
class; rather, report to the main office
and the secretary will ensure that your child
gets to class safely. If necessary a visitor’s sticker will be
issued. It takes only a minute to help keep your children
safe. Students and staff feel safer when a visitor’s sticker
is visible on unfamiliar faces as well as familiar ones. Your
cooperation is appreciated.

Library News
This month in the library, we will focus on the season
of Spring, Life Cycles, the Virtue of Love and Earth
Day.
Our Snuggle Up Book Club continues to be popular,
offering students the opportunity to come to the library during last recess to read or exchange library
books. It is such a pleasure to see so many students
reading every day, playing chess, discussing books,
drawing and enjoying the library!
"Reading should not be presented to children as a
chore or duty.
It should be offered to them as a precious gift."

FLEXIBLE BOUNDARY POLICY
September 2016 PLACEMENTS
In May of each year, teachers and administrators
work together to determine class placements. This is
a complex process, and is done in consultation with
this years’ teachers, support staff and administration.
In each class we strive for a balance of learning
styles, a balance of gender, a balance of learning
needs, and a cross section of abilities.
If you as a parent wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following
guidelines:
 Input must be in written form to Mrs. McCann no
later than April 22, 2016.
 Frame your request in terms of educational contexts e.g. your child’s learning needs/style; information not already known to the school; tips on
what has worked best for your child in the past
 Please be advised that letters which cite the names
of individual teachers, or names of children you
wish to be placed with your child will not be considered.
 There is no guarantee that requests will be fulfilled, but all will be considered.

Earth clean and green.
Walk/Bike to School Wednesdays
We are encouraging fresh air and exercise to promote healthy learning as
well as lessening the emission of carbon monoxide in
the school yard.
We marked EARTH HOUR on March
30th by turning out the lights for an
hour during the day!
All non-essential lights were turned off,
and other lights were reduced ensuring
safety was maintained and normal activities were not adversely disrupted.
Spectators During After School Sporting Events
A reminder to parents that any spectators staying after
school to watch sporting events in the gym MUST be
accompanied by a parent/guardian.
School Dress Code Reminders
We expect that warmer weather
will soon be here, making classrooms somewhat warm and bringing about more casual dress. With this in mind, please
remind your child what is considered suitable clothing
for school. Clothing should be comfortable, tasteful
and appropriate for a school environment. Please refer
to the Dress Code Section of the Student’s Agenda.
Shorts are permitted, as long as they are neither too
tight nor too short. Tank tops, tube tops, halter-tops,
muscle shirts or anything that exposes midriffs are not
suitable for any student from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
Slogans on t-shirts will also be carefully monitored. The
intent of our school dress code policy is to continue to
provide modest, yet comfortable work atmosphere for
our students during the school day. We look forward to
your continued support as concerned parents.

During this week the Catholic community celebrates
the unique and distinctive contribution that Catholic

our province. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the Mission of our Catholic
Schools as they strive to integrate the Gospel values
of Jesus Christ in every aspect of the school’s life and
in curriculum.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” – Matthew 5:7
The subthemes are as follows:
 Monday: Mercy that Welcomes
(Jesus and the Woman at the Well: John 4: 1-42)
 Tuesday: Mercy that Loves
(The Good Samaritan: Luke 10:25-37)
 Wednesday: Mercy that Forgives
ST. DOMINIC’S PARISH NEWS
The church will always gather. What Christians can do
together far surpasses what we can do alone.
Our Parish is in trouble in terms of mass attendance, membership on committees, and in ministries and therefore, struggling
financially. St. Dominic’s church is looking for volunteers, fundraising ideas, and feedback from our community. The church
desperately needs our help in order to continue to meet the
sacred and social needs of our people.
Our community must come together to preserve and save St.
Dominic’s Catholic Church. Our church needs the support of all
of our families. Your help in any capacity is greatly appreciated.
We can email Fr. Phil with suggestions and solutions at
fr.psuggestionbox@gmail.com
In the future church,
attendance won’t
drive engagement;
engagement will
drive attendance.

night so that they are rested.
