Making Ions
1) How many electrons are in the outer level
2) Complete an energy level by either giving or taking away electrons
3) Determine the charge (remember proton number, + charges do not
change)
4) Write the atomic symbol with the charge in the upper right of the
symbol
 Atoms that gain electrons become negatively charged
 Atoms that lose electrons become positively charged
