Soldered Ring
Objectives: Students will create a ring using metal held together by solder.
Vocabulary:
Solder: Something that joins or cements.
Sweat Solder: Melting solder on one object prior to attaching it to the second.
Pickle: A chemical solution, such as an acid, that is used as a bath to remove scale and
oxides from the surface of metals before plating or finishing.
Torch: A portable apparatus that produces a very hot flame by the combustion of gases,
used in welding and construction.
Fusing: To join together by melting.
Flux: A substance applied to a surface to be joined by welding, soldering, or brazing to
facilitate the flowing of solder and prevent formation of oxides.
Goals:
 Design a ring that you would like to make using nickel silver.
 Learn and understand all of the processes involved in ring design including sizing
and shaping.
 Enhance your sawing and filing skills.
 Learn the basics of the soldering process and the safety considerations.
Key Points:
 Begin by sketching at least 5 possible designs.
 Your design must include piercing and alterations to at least one edge.
 Find your ring size.
 Create a mock-up ring using oak tag.
 Consider the finish. Polished, sanded, textured, etc. It must look finished and
professional!!!
