POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Workers Compensation Specialist CATEGORY: Professional FLSA STATUS: Exempt GRADE: B JOB SUMMARY: Manages the day-to-day activities of the District’s Workers’ Compensation Program. YEARLY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: PERCENT OF TIME Manage the day-to-day activities of the District’s Workers’ Compensation Program; responsible for filing time sensitive forms to our Third-Party Administrator (TPA); assist injured employees in the claims process; work with supervisors, Human Resources, and Payroll to get employees back to work promptly and safely. 40% Establish, maintain, and audit records/files; utilize HRIS System to verify employment, salaries and employee information for filing workers’ compensation claims; review work status reports, administer pay adjustments, coordinate FMLA, investigate and process claims; work with TPA to manage large loss time claims; arrange for modified duty and functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) for injured worker. 25% Serve as liaison between the injured employee and the College’s TPA, other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues; maintain and exchange information with internal and external departments or agencies to explain policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines concerning workers’ compensation; ensure organizational compliance to all federal, state, and local laws for the District’s Workers’ Compensation Program. 25% Develop, present, and promote training that informs employees and reduces costs associated with workplace injuries; attend and participate in professional and group meetings, stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of workers’ compensation administration. 5% Other duties as assigned. 5% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Risk Manager SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide work direction to assigned staff. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: 60 credit hours. EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years directly related experience. Skills/Abilities: Experience and ability to apply knowledge of federal, state and local health and safety regulations; Knowledge of Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (TDI-DWC) rules and regulations; Working knowledge of FMLA, ADA, HIPAA, EEO, and Return-to-Work programs; Must have understanding of investigative techniques and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for Workers’ Compensation claims; Must have excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; Must maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials; Effective time management and organizational skills. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer and other equipment associated with a general office environment (copier, telephone, fax, etc.) 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software.
