POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Sign Language Interpreter Non-Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Classified Based on Placement JOB SUMMARY: Perform complex sign language interpreting within a post-secondary setting in order to facilitate communication among the deaf/hard of hearing, faculty, students and staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 60% 1. Perform interpreting (American Sign Language) in classroom setting, in situations involving activities and/or functions and for interdepartmental meetings that are student related. 2. Perform tutoring services for deaf/hard of hearing students in a postsecondary setting. 15% 3. Serve as mentor for student interns. 10% 4. Perform administrative support work and program assistance work. 10% 5. Other duties as assigned. 5% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Interpreting Services Coordinator ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Associate’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Ability to provide the mode of sign language interpreting necessary and appropriate for the student and setting; must be able to provide expression and voice interpreting in American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign Language, English Sign Language and/or Oral interpreting; and ability to switch modes when necessary to accommodate and facilitate communication between the deaf/hard of hearing and the hearing; and familiarity with Texas Relay Service, VRS and similarly related services for the hearing impaired. 2. Equipment Used: Video phone, Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: Sign language related software and media in addition to a variety of wordprocessing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software.
