JOB SUMMARY: Perform complex sign language interpreting within a post-secondary setting in order to
facilitate communication among the deaf/hard of hearing, faculty, student and staff.

Perform interpreting (American Sign Language) in classroom setting, as in
situations involving activities and/or functions and for interdepartmental
meetings.

Perform tutoring services for deaf/hard of hearing in the post-secondary
setting.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Associate’s degree or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to provide the mode of sign language interpreting necessary and
appropriate for the student and setting; must be able to provide expression and voice
interpreting in American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign Language, English Sign Language
and/or oral interpreting; and ability to switch modes when necessary to accommodate and
facilitate communication between various levels of communication between the deaf/hard of
hearing and the hearing.
2.
Equipment Used: Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, and other equipment
associated with an office environment.

Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and
presentation software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials.
Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of
standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Alternative or combined skills in understanding, negotiating, selecting, developing, and
motivating people are important to the highest degree due to constant interaction with other
people, at any level within the organization or the community, position’s accountability for the
development, motivation, assessment, and reward of employees, and to deal with irrational
situations where the outcome is unpredictable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with many and frequent
distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some
disagreeable elements.
