Lab Manager 1 POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: ACS Lab Manager Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Professional Support G (Technology Support) JOB SUMMARY: Manage, establish, plan and implement the policies, procedures, and operations to support the District’s Academic Computer Centers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 1. Plan, implement, and manage the daily operations of campus instructional labs, including staffing, communication, problem resolution, equipment maintenance, and supplies. Provide direct supervision and personnel management of staff assigned to District ACS Laboratories. Coordinate with Deans and instructional staff to ensure proper academic and technical support is available to students and faculty. 30% 2. Manage the deployment, maintenance, support, and upgrade of equipment. Maintain advanced computing expertise in both technology and techniques, to support the technical functions of the District labs as a whole. 20% 3. Develop and maintain an inventory system for instructional materials and equipment. Research new technology appropriate for the lab, which may include specialized products; evaluate new software/hardware for potential lab use, make recommendations for purchases; and obtain vendor quotes on various items. 20% 4. Work with the District’s Information Technology Security Manager to insure the laboratories are implementing and sustaining the appropriate security measures. 20% 5. Recommends short- and long-term goals/objectives and/or operating policies/procedures. Develop budget recommendations and manage lab activities within approved budget. 10% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Administrator SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct supervision of personnel assigned to laboratory. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s or equivalent Effective: 11/1/04 Page 1 of 2 Lab Manager 2 EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both oral and written. Familiarity with computer hardware and software, and assigned laboratory equipment, in order to effectively diagnose problems and provide instruction. Ability to travel frequently throughout the District. 2. Equipment Used: Personal computers and related equipment found in a computer laboratory, e.g. RJ45, Crimpier, Routers, Hubs, and Network Cables. 3. Software Used: A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software to include Notepad, C and C++-programming, HTML, RPG, Cobol, Visual Basic, FrontPage, Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Products, Corel Office Suite, and Banner. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little to moderate physical effort in working with light (up to 30lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed may cause light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as, sensitivity to the other person’s point of view are often required to influence behavior, change an opinion, turn a situation around, cause action, or understanding in others. This level of interpersonal skills is required in positions, which regularly interact with others, through personal contact or presentations, within the organization or members in the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in laboratory or comparable working area with many and frequent distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
