UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Syllabus Turkish Advanced Turkish Level 4+ Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Turkish Levels 1 to 4 at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor). An advance level is required. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students who have an advanced knowledge of Turkish to acquire a better command and fluency in the language. Students will be able to follow discussions and debates on current issues and write essays as well as communicate in all situations using complex and linguistically more accurate structures. Authentic texts will be studied for further development of cultural awareness through analysis and cross-reading. Functions - - Expressing opinions and ideas through well structured presentations. Recognising and using various registers. Development of reading skills of complex analytical and critical discourse. Ability to interact any kind of debate. Ability to summarise a listening exercise and answer the debate questions. Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered Prepositions of place - The Environment and environmental issues and solutions. Fashion, body image and advertising. Women’s right and its development in Turkey and other countries. Advantages and disadvantages of technology and the effects on youth. Architecture and development of cities - Istanbul. 1 - Turkish films: watching and discussion. Nature/human interaction and advantages of growing up close to nature. Phonetics - Recognising/understanding various register/accents. Grammar - Words imitating sounds in nature.. Passive. The reflexive. The reflexive pronoun. Causative and uses of causative.
