UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Syllabus Turkish Upper Intermediate Turkish Level 3 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Turkish Levels 1, 1+, 2 and 2+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor). Ability to make suggestions, express ideas, make negotiations and discussions is required. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function in everyday spoken and written Turkish at upper intermediate level to converse with native speakers and discuss personal, social and current issues using appropriate grammatical structures. The reading and writing skills will be further developed through cultural awareness by extended use of authentic material. Functions Expressing ideas and opening discussions on social and current issues. Discussing topics by giving examples. Understanding the meaning and themes in articles and news and interpreting. Making oral presentations on a chosen topic. - Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Talking about likes and dislikes by using verbal nouns Making suggestions for free time events. What should one do to be happy and how to deal with stress. Advertisements, poetry, songs, articles. Introducing a region in Turkey. Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Vowel harmony 1 - Understanding the meaning of complex sentences through different listening material. ( adverts, news, interviews.) Grammar - Revision of gerund and conjunctions Revision of obligations, necessities. Verbal Nouns Revising infinitive; mek Short infinitive; me. Relative Clause. Participles Derivational suffixes.
