UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Syllabus Turkish Proficiency Turkish Level Proficiency Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Turkish syllabus level 5+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor). A post advance level of Turkish is required. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The course is designed for highly advanced level students requiring the language for vocational and professional purposes. The aim of the course is to enable students to show mastery in their linguistic skills through authentic texts and variety of activities (debates, tasks, reading and note taking specialist texts, negotiating, presentations, projects etc.) to become fully competent in Turkish language. Various transferable skills will be covered, knowledge and use of complex structures will be enhanced. Functions - Dealing with application or job forms and interviews. Conducting presentations on a variety of specialist topics. Negotiating and problem solving for given tasks. Summarising and translating complex information from English to Turkish(and vice versa). Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - As in level 5+, the content of this course will be based around a reflection on the nature of contemporary society and current affairs. Since the students in this course will be having a full command of the language, the syllabus will remain 1 - quite flexible and various topics may be studied, depending on their interests, such as: Translating extracts from Turkish Literature - plays, short stories, articles. Work environment Visual arts and technology. Art and trade exhibitions, Corporate life Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Recognising/understanding various register/accents. Recognising/understanding any kind of discourse.
