UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Syllabus Turkish Upper Intermediate Turkish Level 3+ Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Turkish Levels 1 to 3 at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor). An upper intermediate level is required. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function in everyday spoken and written Turkish at upper intermediate level to converse with native speakers fluently and discuss personal, social and current issues using appropriate grammatical structures. Cultural awareness will be enhanced with the extended use of authentic material and presentations. Functions - Reporting events, using past perfect. Asking questions with past aorist and past perfect. Talking about habits in the past. Stating preferences by using conditional. Making comparisons. Writing informal and formal letters. Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Making plans for near future and distant future Health and fitness. Expressing their preferences, obligations, wishes and choices. Time related words and conjunctions; while, when, by, Jobs/careers/CVs/Job’s interview/Letters. Renting a house – negotiating. Reading a short story. Making presentations on a chosen topic. 1 Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Improving pronunciation by listening exercises. Grammar - Revision of time expressions: since, for, from .... until ...., after, before. Revision of let’s and shall structures and learning the question form, Which: ki suffix, different uses of ki. Revision of Tenses If conditionals with different tenses. Revision of can and can not. May/might and may not/might not. Comparisons Conjunctions and gerund.
