UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Syllabus Turkish Advanced Turkish Level 4 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Turkish Levels 1 to 3+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor). An upper intermediate level is required. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students who already have a good knowledge of Turkish to acquire a better fluency and advanced level using more complex and accurate structures appropriate to advanced level. Students will be able to communicate in all situations using more complex and accurate structures, a wider range of vocabulary, converse with native speakers and follow debates on a wide range of issues. Cultural awareness will be further developed and raise through authentic texts and various transferable skills will be covered. Functions - Understanding and describing the causes and consequences of an action or event in detailed and complex sentences. Expressing opinions, debating, commenting. Improving reading, writing and listening skills through authentic material. Making effective and clear presentations and opening one’s ideas to debate. Noticing the differences between styles and genres. Composing written pieces for different purposes. Expressing opinions and ideas through well structured presentations. Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Means of communication (emails, mobiles, FB, twitter) 1 - Following current events and festivals through newspapers. Arts (literature, music, cultural heritage,) Turkish literature – short stories. Newspaper articles. Preparing and making presentations. Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Recognising/understanding various register/accents ___________________________________________________________________________________ Grammar - Object participles – Present, past and future participles. Object participles from possessives. Object participles as nouns. Time expressions: when with object participle. Indirect speech. Combinations with dik-(y)ecek + possessive.
