North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - East and North Herts NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement F1 Geriatric Medicine Elderly Medicine Ward based Presenting patients on Consultant Ward Rounds and benefiting from learning on the rounds. Ward jobs (e.g. Venflons, bloods etc.) TTO & discharge summaries. Requesting and analysing investigation. Discussion regarding patients with microbiologists, radiologists & pathologists to manage medical issues & learn. Writing drugs & reviewing medications. MDT meetings Communicating with patients and families Liaising with Palliative Care & other medical teams Learning about chronic disease, multiple pathologies and varied presentations of disease in old age. Once a week teaching. Learn to take ownership of patients, with senior support. On call provides plenty of clerking opportunities and decision making under supervision. Clinical skills practice Management of acutely unwell patient, chronic disease and patient’s social issues. Lister Hospital Dr S Khan, Dr T Tong, Dr Rippingale, Dr Lines, Dr Jain, Dr Wijyasiri, Dr Malik Ward rounds – consultant led, registrar led and CT led. Clerking patients All ward work Patient assessment and management paperwork, discharging and prescribing Bloods and cannulas Other procedures e.g. blood gases, urinary catheters Arranging investigations Managing patients acutely Discharge co-ordination TTOs MDT meetings Mon – Fri: Ward work and ward round On call requirements: Clerking patients – “work – up” Further managements Ward cover Nights, weeks on call, weekends on call with days off before and after East and North Herts NHS Trust Employer information It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
