F1 General Medicine – Acute Internal Medicine

Ward based

TTO / discharge letters

Ward jobs including bloods / IV cannulas

Practical skills including chest drain, pleural tap, ascitic tap etc.

Clerking and making initial management decisions for unselected acute

Main duties of the placement admissions

Managing acutely ill patients

Reviewing progress of patients and their care

Communication with patients and families

Liaising with specialty teams for referrals and follow-up

Multidisciplinary working

Development of excellent team working, time management and prioritization skills

Weekly specialized acute medicine teaching

Weekly clinical governance and audit meetings

On call provides plenty of clerking opportunities and decision making under supervision.

Ward rounds: Acute assessment and short stay wards: Daily consultant

Typical working pattern in this placement support

All ward jobs

Patient care including assessment, ongoing review and management decisions

Liaising with other medical and allied health professional teams

All paperwork and documentation associated with the above including TTOs / discharge letters, prescribing, ward round and referral documentation.

Requesting investigations and onward referrals

Multidisciplinary working to co-ordinate safe and efficient discharge

Provide ongoing care and communication with patients and their relatives.

On calls

Mon – Fri : Ward round and jobs

On call requirements : 1:7 weekends & weekdays
