Upper Torrence Creek Stream restoration at The Park Project to improve water quality is nearly finished Planting along the banks is under way, the final step of Storm Water Services’ project to repair and restore Upper Torrence Creek inside “The Park” business area in Huntersville. The stream was badly eroded after years of trying to carry too much storm water runoff. While all streams carry some sediment, the large amounts of silt in Upper Torrence Creek were causing water quality and aquatic life in the stream to suffer. This project stabilized and restored more than 4,000 linear feet of stream. Gentle curves were added to the stream’s path to slow the speed of the water and protect against future erosion. Rocky sections add oxygen to the water, while deeper pools benefit fish, birds and a wide variety of insects that live in or near the stream. This project was designed to improve water quality and is not intended to reduce flood risks. The Park-Huntersville is a partner in this water quality project, with funding provided by the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund and CharlotteMecklenburg Storm Water Services fees. This is one of eight Storm Water Services projects to improve water quality in the McDowell Watershed and in Mountain Island Lake, Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s drinking water source.
