VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram?
T e xt Re spo nse
I cho se this pro gram because I did no t get my to p Euro pean cho ices! But I ended up having a cho ice between a few Euro pean and Asian destinatio ns (because o f a
mistake during my applicatio n) and cho se Bangko k because I wanted to step as far o ut o f my co mfo rt zo ne as po ssible. I think I was scared to put it as my to p cho ice at
first, but eventually realized it was a o nce in a lifetime o ppo rtunity--whereas I did no t feel the same way abo ut the pro spects o f living in Euro pe.
I wanted to cho o se a pro gram that was very different fro m the Western culture that I'm used to . I also have an interest in learning abo ut So utheast Asian culture, Buddhism

34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
Well the classes are three ho urs which really sucks. Impo ssible to pay attentio n fo r that lo ng. So I actually disliked that aspect, but o f co urse having class o nce a week
o pens up po tential travel plans.
Each class met o nce per week and was three ho urs lo ng with a 30 minute break. (I think it's suppo sed to be 15 minutes but usually ended up being at least 30 ). I liked it
because yo u went to class o nce and go t it o ver with fo r the rest o f the week and that freed up a lo t o f yo ur time to do whatever yo u want. Three ho urs might seem like a lo ng
time but with the 30 minute break it's really no t bad at all.

Financial Statement Analysis. It's extremely difficult. It requires a kno wledge o f internatio nal acco unting that US students do no t have, and the teacher was mean to put it

I tho ught Lo gic and Philo so phy wo uld be interesting but it was actually pretty dry and everyo ne go t pretty bad grades. My friend did the best o ut o f all the exchange students

T e xt Re spo nse
I traveled 5 weekends and then to o k two weeks o ff o f class to travel fo r two weeks straight. On my weekend excursio ns, I went to Ko h Samui (a so uthern Thai island,) Bali,
Bo rneo , (No te Bali and Bo rneo was with my parents and really is no t financially feasible o n a student budget,) Sri Lanka, and Ho ng Ko ng. With my two week adventure I
went to Cambo dia, Lao s, and Vietnam. I also have taken two day trips via train and rental car to two Wo rld HEritage Sites no t far fro m Bangko k.
I travelled fo ur times. The first time was to Ko h Pang Gan fo r the half mo o n party fo r my ro o mmate's birthday. The seco nd time was to Ayutthaya, which is a city in Thailand
that has ancient ruins built in aro und 110 0 AD. The third time was to Cambo dia with my ro o o mmate. I literally walked into his ro o m o ne night and asked, "Hey. Wanna go to
Cambo dia to mo rro w mo rning?" Within like twelve ho urs we were o n a train and o n o ur way to see Angko r Wat, a magnificent temple built in aro und 10 0 0 AD. The fo urth
time was after I finished my finals, and I went with my o ther ro o mmate to Nepal. That was mindblo wing. We spent several days trekking in the Himalayas, which was
co mpletely spellbinding at times. We spent the last day in Kathmandu, the capital city, in awe o f its mystical atmo sphere and wo nderful peo ple. It was an unfo rgettable
experience.

51. Did the structure o f the ho st institutio n's co urse schedule fo ster travel

T e xt Re spo nse
So mewhat. The class o nce a week allo wed yo u to stack yo ur schedule if yo u really wanted. I initially planned o n taking class o nly two days a week but quickly realized the 9
ho urs a day I'd have to take was hell and was ruining my week as I dreaded the tho ughts o f that ho rrible day. Also , yo u are suppo sedly o nly allo wed to miss 20 percent o f
classes (aka just two classes) o r yo u canno t take the final exam. There is also no Spring Break o r any ho lidays fo r that matter. Finally, teachers can make up class o n any
day they want to . Thus yo u may have had travel plans o n Saturday fo r a mo nth, and then find o ut yo ur class o n Wednesday that was cancelled because the teacher was o n
ho liday wo uld be made up o n Saturday. To ugh to avo id. A bit frustrating.
Fo ster. Classes o nly met o nce a week so yo u had a lo t o f time to travel, as lo ng as yo u made sure mo st o f yo ur classes were o n the same days. I had fo ur-day scho o l

and Calcutta are abo ut two ho urs away. Sri Lanka and Nepal are abo ut three ho urs. Delhi and Mumbai are o nly 4-5. The destinatio ns that can be easily visited are simply

www.seat6 1.co m is aweso me fo r learning exactly ho w to get fro m place to place. It to ld us step-by-step o n ho w to get to Cambo dia. The bo o k Lo nely Planet is also great,
