34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
It really depended o n the co urse itself, but the class structure in terms o f ho mewo rk, quizzes, midterms, and finals is quite similar. Business classes have a lo t mo re emphasis o n gro up presentatio ns, so many o f my classes did no t actually have final exams which was nice. Altho ugh I'm no t the biggest fan o f gro up pro jects, it was nice in that I wasn't o verlo aded with exams at the end o f my semester.
So me o f the co urses I to o k did no t have a final exam and had a final paper instead. I dislike that difference because I prefer to take a final exam. Faculty o f Arts co urses are the co urses that usually have final papers instead o f final exams and are mo re likely to have fewer exams than co urses fro m the Faculty o f Business and Eco no mics.
Business and eco no mics co urses are structured mo re like USC co urses in terms o f different grading metho ds. Mo st co urses tend to put the mo st weight o n the final. I do no t like this as well because I prefer a mo re balanced grading scale with weight mo re evenly distributed amo ng different grading metho ds.

Yes. I decided that Ho ng Ko ng is no t so mewhere that is right fo r me to wo rk and live, except fo r a sho rt-term perio d because I do no t want to go into Finance o r Real Estate there, and it is hard to wo rk there if yo u are no t in tho se industries. Wo rking in Ho ng Ko ng fo r me will mo st likely be in co nsulting because co nsulting can be do ne anywhere. Marketing may also be an o ptio n, but to wo rk in Marketing, it is necessary to also speak Canto nese o r Mandarin, depending o n the market fo cus o f a firm.
Because o f no t speaking Chinese, I do no t believe I can wo rk there lo ng term in any industries I wo uld want to pursue. Ho wever, being in Ho ng Ko ng has inspired me to learn ho w to read Chinese characters since certain businesses such as restaurants do no t have their pro ducts written in English.

HKU has many rando m ho lidays and breaks during the scho o l year. There's a "reading week" each semester which is like a Fall/Spring break...it's no t a bad idea to bo o k tickets o r plan a trip in advance fo r that week if yo u do plan to travel. My advice o verall is to take advantage o f HK's lo catio n in regards to the rest o f Asia and S.E Asia.
Traveling is quite easy aro und the area with cheap tickets available (if yo u buy in advance)...many times we bo o ked trips last minute, which still wo rked o ut fine, but we definitely co uld've saved co sts if we planned early o n.
Make plans early. Bo o k plane tickets and ho tels no t to o early, as there are plenty o f deals thro ugh Cathay Pacific Fanfares, Gro upo n HK, and o thers. Also , make many friends while o n exchange so yo u have lo ts o f o ptio ns o f peo ple to travel with.

Ho ng Ko ng is tiny relative to Califo rnia...it literally is a speck o n the map. I o riginally tho ught I wo uld be able to co ver Ho ng Ko ng in a week's time, which yo u co uld (if yo u o nly visit the really to uristy places), but take time to go o ut o f the city and explo re the hidden gems o f HK (i.e New Territo ries, the beaches, etc.) Ho ng Ko ng is made up fo r hundreds o f small islands, which peo ple fo rget, so take advantage o f all the beautiful beaches, bays, and hikes that are available just o utside o f the city.
That HKU co ursewo rk is to o heavy and the fo reign language co urses are rather strict when it co mes to getting into a particular level o f a class. Open-mindedness and patience is key. Traveling thro ugh Asia is different than traveling thro ugh Euro pe. Especially if yo u do n't speak the co untry's language, it might be difficult getting yo urself aro und with all the language barriers. Travel in gro ups always...no t just because it's safer, but because yo u get to kno w the o ther exchange kids and build mo re relatio nships that way. Certain mannerisms o r custo ms (i.e no o ne likes to make a single-filed line in China o r peo ple may seem to be yelling when talking o n the pho ne in a subway) may seem harsh o r hard to get used to , but again, be o pen to it. Also , always try to pack & travel lightly when backpacking thro ugh multiple co untries at a time.
Make plans early, make many friends as to have may travel o ptio ns, and so metimes yo u need to think in terms o f US Do llar value, no t lo cal currency value, Lo o k o ut fo r deals such as at Gro upo n HK and Cathay Pacific Fanfares. It was truly the best semester o f my life. I wo uld first o f all say I'm so jealo us o f yo ur jo urney ahead and to take me back with yo u! Ho ng Ko ng is o ne o f the wo rld's mo st dynamic cities, I can no t express that eno ugh. Tho ugh it's technically a part o f China, there is still a lo t o f remnants o f British culture everywhere. One seco nd yo u'll be walking thro ugh Central o r the business district, which is bo mbarded with busy expats and co vered with internatio nal luxury brands and the next seco nd yo u'll find yo urself walking thro ugh a small alley way o f lo cal Chinese fruit stands. Yo u'll co nstantly be surprised o ne way o r ano ther. Do n't wo rry if yo u can't speak the language, I didn't kno w any Canto nese and I was the fine the who le semester. Yo u'll be able to get aro und just fine kno wing English, which is ano ther co nvenient facto r. HK has pro bably o ne o f the wo rld's mo st efficient transpo rtatio n systems; so mething I will definitely miss co ming back to traffic-co ngested LA. The first week may be so co nfusing and yo u may get o verwhelmed, but take things o ne at a time...so me peo ple may just try to travel the entire semester, but get to kno w Ho ng Ko ng, the city yo u cho se to study abro ad in. Mo st times when I travelled, I abso lutely co uldn't wait to get back to HK. Make new friends, bo th exchange and lo cal students...tho ugh mo st exchange students naturally fo rm clo se friendships early o n, meet lo cal HK friends as well in o rder to keep lo ng-lasting friends in HK itself and to really get the inside sco o p o n HK life.
If yo u go to HKU, be prepared to do a lo t o f co ursewo rk. It was really to o much fo r me, so yo u may co nsider o ther o ptio ns in Ho ng Ko ng. Cho o se HKU!!!! It was the first semester that USC did an IEP pro gram with HKU and I'm surprised that we never had this partnership befo re. HKU co mpared to the o ther 2 universities (CUHK, HKUST) has the BEST lo catio n. It is o n Ho ng Ko ng Island, which is the heart o f the city itself. The o ther 2 universities are farther away and is quite inco nvenient to get in & o ut o f the city easily. If yo u want to experience city life and see Ho ng Ko ng as a metro po lis, cho o se HKU.
First o f all, go to Ho ng Ko ng! It is an amazing place because it is very co mpact, yet it has almo st everything. Chinese fo o d is best there in the wo rld fo r its variety, and mo st o f the fo o d is extremely cheap! Co nsider staying in Ho ng Ko ng o ver winter break as well. It may change yo ur o pinio n o f yo ur exchange to a mo re po sitive o utlo o k. To live in Ho ng Ko ng o ver winter break was very cheap, and it was well wo rth every do llar I spent. Lastly, cho o se a study abro ad pro gram that is mo re established o ver all o ther facto rs because pro grams that have been aro und lo nger tend to give better experiences to students since they have had many years to make adjustments to suit the needs o f exchange students.
