OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram? T e xt Re spo nse I was really impressed with the video s o n the IE University website that gave a snapsho t o f its academics and student life. Ho wever, we later fo und o ut that we wo uld be studying in Madrid rather than Sego via. I also learned that IE was a very well regarded business scho o l in Euro pe and the wo rld. Lastly, I wanted to have the o ppo rtunity to travel aro und Euro pe during breaks since it was my first time go ing to Euro pe. I cho se the pro gram because the idea o f taking entrepreneurship co urses appealed to me, I had 6 years o f Spanish experience, and IE was a very well regarded university internatio nally. Because I had a great experience with the ExCEL pro gram and Sean O'Co nnell enco uraged me to do it since mo st transfer students do n't. Best advise and decisio n ever! Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences? T e xt Re spo nse We had mo re class discussio ns in class at IE than at USC, which I liked a lo t. They also have even mo re gro up pro jects and papers than USC, which so metimes was nice, but o ther times it was to ugh to co o rdinate since we all lived all o ver the city o f Madrid. Overall, IE fo cuses mo re o n papers and presentatio ns than exams, which I liked. Also a co uple o f o ur co urses had jo int pro fesso rs and they wo uld switch o ff every few weeks. Co urse schedules are no t standard every week as they are at USC. Certain co urses start at the beginning o f the semester. Certain o nes start in the middle, while o thers end in the middle. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. Yo ur final exams and perio ds o f stress are far mo re spread o ut thro ugh the semester, which is nice because yo u do n't have to be cramming fo r 5 exams all at o nce. On the o ther hand, the schedule can be hard to get used to since the classes yo u're taking each week change so frequently. Also , classes are much mo re discussio n heavy than USC, which I find to be much mo re lecture based. IE also makes much mo re use o f case studies than USC. I liked IE's style much better. The classes are very small. Abo ut 15 students per class. The pro fesso rs are great and easy to understand and get help fro m since the classes are so small. Very very few co urses have regular ho mewo rk assignments. I so metimes liked o r disliked these differences depending o n the co urse (ex: it was great no t having assignments in general, but fo r classes like acco unting - having access to mo re example material and co ntent to wo rk with wo uld have been appreciated) St at ist ic To tal Respo nses Value 4 26. 35. I wo uld also reco mmend Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets with Julio Castro as he's a very energetic and engaging pro fesso r, and I learned a lo t abo ut businesses in Latin America. Aleksio s Go tso plo lo us' co urses o n New Venture Creatio n & Entrepreneurial Management and Generating Business Value fro m New Techno lo gies are amazing. He's a fantastic teacher who understands his students very well. Tashfeen So hail is really go o d at getting students interested in the subject matter with tho ught-pro vo king discussio n but he is no t easy in his demands o n the students. Julio de Castro is the Chair o f IE's Entrepreneurship Department and he is a really fun teacher. His class o n Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets is very easy but very interesting. Internatio nal Strategy: If yo u wo uld like to be an executive o ne day and wo rk o n Harvard cases this class is a must. Plus, Pro fesso r Richardo Perez is so smart and has wo rked fo r a lo t o f huge co mpanies. Are there co urses o r pro fesso rs that yo u wo uld advise against taking? Please explain: T e xt Re spo nse IE University is a very new scho o l, so it was the first time teaching fo r so me o f o ur pro fesso rs. The two I wo uldn't reco mmend are Onal Vural and Fernando Bautista. They just didn't kno w ho w to teach all that well, and were very hard to fo llo w in lectures. Financing Entrepreneurial Co mpanies, taught by Onal Vural, was an incredibly bo ring class. The pro fesso r had no idea ho w to teach a class and all he did was read o ff a Po werPo int that was pro vided by the bo o k publishers. Ho wever, the material fo r the class, which was much easier to learn fro m the bo o k, was pro bably very useful fo r aspiring entrepreneurs. Internatio nal Finance and Emerging Markets: Go o d subject but the wo rst pro fesso r ever. 8 0 % o f the class dro pped and he didn't even get into emerging makers. Financial Systems and Institutio ns with So ledad - the pro fesso r has a terrible accent and yo u can't understand anything she's trying to say. She means well, but wo rst co urse at IE. Generating Business Value - First o f all, if yo u want an easy class - this is the easiest co urse at IE that I to o k so go fo r it. My ho st family always served far to o much fo o d at the dinner table and expected me to eat it (they acted o ffended if I didn't). T e xt Re spo nse Depending o n yo ur ho me bank, it is very useful to o pen a Spanish bank acco unt, and it's no t as co mplicated as it seems. In general, it's best to bo o k flights well in advance, but fo r so me lo catio ns it's actually best to wait it o ut a little.
