VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram?
T e xt Re spo nse
Australia was o ne o f my to p cho ices o f places to go , ans was happy to take a bit o f a break fro m the business o f LA and go so mewhere a little mo re relaxed - Canberra.
ANU is ranked 16 th in the wo rld. Also , I wanted a change fro m living in a big city like LA.
Only o ptio n available
The surveys co mpleted by students who did IEP mo tivated me to study abro ad.
I wanted to go to either Euro pe o r Australia, and Australia was my third cho ice.
I have always wanted to go to Australia, and I knew that I wo uld need a large amo unt o f time to see everything I wanted to see. I picked ANU because I did no t just want to
attend a scho o l because it was a requirement. I wanted to be immersed in their culture, and I knew that ANU wo uld allo w me to do that.

34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
At ANU fo r no n-finance business co urses the structure is quite similar, with assignments, participatio n, etc being wo rth anywhere fro m 6 0 %-75% and the final exam wo rth
25%-40 %. The main difference being that even tho ugh the exam may be wo rth less than 50 % yo u'd still need a 50 % o n so me exams to graduate (it was an additio nal
hurdle). The finals also tended to be mo re co mprehensive, co vering much mo re than the finals may have co vered at USC. Fo r finance co urses mo st o f the time the exam
wo uld be 70 %+ o f the grade.
ANU fo cuses mo re o n the textbo o k/theo ry. I like USC's co urses mo re because USC fo cuses o n applicatio n.
Classes are typically reco rded so many students do no t actually attend co urses. Instead o f having discussio n sectio ns, co urses have 'tuto rials' which basically serve the
same purpo se. Yo u aren't able to register fo r tuto rials until the co urse has begun, so it is difficult to kno w yo ur schedule fro m the beginning.

MGMT-30 27, Entrepreneurship and Inno vatio n. Bo th the pro fesso r (Chris Nailer) and TA (Ro ss) are excellent, with many years o f business experience and are great

Entrepreneurship and Inno vatio n with Chris Nailer. Great pro fesso r, really kno wledgeable and helpful.

BUSN-30 28 , Business in China. Fo r this class we had two pro fesso rs, Jiang Fuming and Lin Ciu, each taking half the classes. The first pro fesso r, Jiang Fuming, altho ugh
painfully bo ring, was at least a nice eno ugh guy and reaso nable grader. Ho wever, the main assignment he had as do , a literature review, was absurd fo r an undergrad
business class and had no practicality. He really didn't have any no n-academic experience. And, he's actually leaving ANU this year so he wo n't be here next year which
brings me to the seco nd pro fesso r. Lin Ciu, who will be there (and I assume taking o ver this class), was also just as bo ring. While he had us do case studies which were a
little mo re relevant, he pro vided almo st no directio n (including no rubric), graded them very hard, and pro vided us feedback well after it wo uld have been useful. He was
also inappro priately nasty and co ndescending to students in fro nt o f the class when giving presentatio ns. MGMT-30 21, Leadership. Pro fesso r, Michael Andrews, TA Sally
Curtis. This class was also painfully bo ring, with the pro fesso r just dro ning o n abo ut so me perso n's theo ry after ano ther perso n's that basically said the same thing.
Instead o f teaching practical leadership skills which I hear the USC leadership class do es, this is so lely fo cused o n memo rizing theo ries. As in all o f them; fo r the exam.

I traveled abo ut o ne weekend a mo nth, plus every break and after scho o l was o ut. There's a $15-$30 (depending o n when yo u get the ticket) bus Sydney to Canberra abo ut

Brisbane, skiing in Australia at Persher and Thredbo (bo th as expected were pretty bad but still fun...) and to New Zealand (12 day ro ad trip). Flights within Australia (like
SYD/Canberra to Cains is abo ut $20 0 -$30 0 each way) are much mo re expensive than in the US. Flights to New Zealand are pretty cheap (maybe $10 0 -$19 0 ). And driving
o n the left side o f the ro ad isn't that bad, just take it slo w the first day. There are numero us co mpanies in New Zealand and I think so me in Australia (o nly rented a car in NZ)
that will rent to peo ple 18 -20 .
Almo st every mo nth. Cairns. Sydney. New Zealand. Tasmania. Melbo urne.
At least o nce per mo nth. Sydney, Melbo urne, Cairns (Great Barrier Reef), New Zealand
I traveled during the 2 week break perio d and after exams. I went to the Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach, Go ld Co ast, Sydney and Melbo urne.

T e xt Re spo nse
Many classes had participatio n grades, but they weren't that big o f a deal and were o nly in the TA sessio ns. Fo r me it was easy eno ugh to schedule all o f my TA sessio ns
with participatio n grades as well as mo st o f my lectures o n Mo nday and Tuesday, with just o ne lecture o n Weds., and o ne o n Thursday mo rning. When TA signups o pen,
just be sure to have everything planned o ut, and get o n them FAST, as the "desirable" times do fill up. When I did travel during scho o l I either left right after my Thursday
lecture, o r Tuesday night/Wednesday mo rning (my Weds. lecture had full video taping and Thursday and audio taping o nline). I fo und the wo rklo ad mo stly a bit less than
USC and a bit easier.
Fo stered travel because instructio nal ho urs weren't very demanding and I had Fridays o ff.
Neither. By cho o sing a schedule with o pen days there were mo re o ppo rtunities to travel. The scho o l o nly spo nso red o ne small travel o ppo rtunity which I did no t use. It was
easier and mo re desirable to make my o wn travel plans.
The two week ho liday break was eno ugh time to travel to three destinatio ns. Just make sure yo u bo o k early and plan yuo r trip o ut!
Yes, no class o n Fridays and all lectures were taped/reco rded so that o ne co uld take a lo ng weekend trip and no t miss class.

T e xt Re spo nse
STA travel is a ripo ff, tried them fo r a to ur package in Cairns, then pieced it to gether myself in 15 mins and fo und they were putting in like a $150 co mmissio n. Bo o k flights
EARLY, they do n't go do wn in price in Australia usually, generally o nly up. Fo r Canberra to Melbo urne Tiger is generally always the cheapest. Otherwise it's a to ss up
between Virgin Blue and JetStar. Murrays buses are cheap, clean, and reliable fo r getting fro m Sydney to Canberra. I'd reco mmend flying in to Sydney when yo u get there
because it's a lo t cheaper than Canberra, then grabbing the bus to Canberra. It's a direct bus and leaves straight fro m the Sydney Airpo rt, then so meo ne fro m ANU will pick
yo u up and take yo u to yo ur do rm fro m the bus statio n.
Research ho stels ahead o f time. Keep an o pen mind. Explo re. Try new things. Be co nfident. Meet new peo ple.
Bo o k flights early and lo o k up baggage weight requirements. Make sure to co nsult impo rt/expo rt guidelines befo re go ing thro ugh custo ms!
Bring warm clo thes if yo u're planning to study at ANU during USC's fall semester. It gets belo w 0 degrees celsius at night. During no vember, the heat is unbearable, so
bring so me spring/summer clo thes as well.
TRAVEL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! IT WAS LITERALLY THE BEST PART OF THE TRIP. YOU'LL ONLY REGRET THE PLACES YOU DON'T GO. ALSO, YOU DON'T HAVE
TO PLAN EVERYTHING OUT IN ADVANCE, AUSTRALIA IS A BIG BACK-PACKING COUNTRY - YOU CAN FIND DEALS WHEN YOU GET PLACES BETTER THAN YOU

Co nnecting with the Australians, fo reign, and o ther exchange students.

Meeting incredible peo ple in a co mpletely different enviro nment than USC/LA
Just kno wing that I was at the o ther side o f the wo rld, o n my o wn and with new friends was really aweso me. I really enjo yed living o utside the city. But the best part o f the

Australia is a laid back place - pretty much everything is "no wo rries" there.
Fo cusing o n scho o l when all yo u want to do is travel.

Things clo se crazy early ho urs, like 5 PM, and aren't o pen o n Sundays (except gro cery sto res that have mo re US no rmal ho urs). So unless yo u want McDo nald's there's
no go o d, 4 AM takeo ut - yo u actually have to co o k (I go t used to co o king at 4 AM, there's always peo ple in the kitchen).

6 3. What do yo u wish yo u had kno wn abo ut befo re leaving?
T e xt Re spo nse
Australia is much slo wer than the US. I fo und this quite nice but it just takes so me getting used to . ESPECIALLY Canberra. Altho ugh the capital - it's so rt o f a farm to wn.
Ho wever, it's a nice change fro m LA and I think was go o d fo r me. What's the po int o f go ing to mo re o f the same? There is heaps to do within ANU tho ugh, and there are still
a number o f bars and clubs in the city center - yo u will no t be bo ard. Also , the drinks in Canberra are way cheaper (like $2 at mo st places o n Thursday nights) than in
Sydney. Everything else tho ugh, fo o d, co st o f living, etc, is a bit mo re expensive in Canberra than the rest o f Australia. If yo u like steak and lamb, it's literally 1/3 o f the price
o f what it co sts o n the US :) Internet is mo re expensive in the US. All the do rms charge abo ut 7 cents/megabyte. It's also no t as pervasive, again, it's a laid back co untry and
peo ple just aren't co nstantly co nnected and wired like in the US as much.
Everything's expensive. I spent $10 0 o n bedding that I had to leave behind.
Even tho ugh the lo catio n may no t be ideal, the experience itself is wo rth go ing fo r.
I wish I had better prepared fo r the co ld weather...
I wish I had kno wn mo re abo ut the city and the scho o l.

6 4. Do yo u have any travel tips to share?
T e xt Re spo nse
Ho stels are generally safe, clean, and inexpensive. Just do n't be stupid, lo ck yo ur lapto p, etc. Also , make sure yo u get there in time fo r o rientatio n week (it's a massive
party) and leave a few weeks to travel after the semester is o ver. When traveling after the semester, if flying o ut o f Sydney, make friends with so meo ne that lives there and is
willing to sto re half yo ur stuff at their ho use while yo u travel so yo u just have to deal with o ne backpack. And, if all else is equal, fly Qantas. They're the o nly airline that if
yo u're flying USA to Australia yo u get 2 x 23kg (50 lb) suitcases instead o f just o ne in eco no my class.
Do n't o verpack.

If yo u're planning o n travelling by car, make sure yo u o bey the speeding limits. If yo u're planning o n travelling by airplane, I suggest yo u buy yo ur tickets fro m Tigerairways.
Pack light! The things yo u o wn end up o wning yo u.
Plan ahead.

6 5. What wo uld yo u like to say to the students go ing after yo u?
T e xt Re spo nse
I highly reco mmend living in Burto n and Garren Hall. It's a do rm o n campus and everyo ne gets a private ro o m with a sink. Relatively inexpensive, everyo ne shares a huge
kitchen and dining area in the co mmo n blo ck. There's also a bar, po o l, and ping-po ng tables. The peo ple are VERY welco ming with to ns o f events and really integrate yo u
into the co mmunity - it's pro bably o ne o f the mo st so cial places to live at ANU. Even fo r o ur mid-year o rientatio n, it was literally 10 days straight o f events, parties, and
ICBM (the lo cal club everyo ne fro m B&G ends up at the end o f mo st Thursday nights). Fro m talking to peo ple I met that didn't live in o n campus ho using o r lived in so me o f
the less so cial halls, they seemed to have a very different and no t necessarily as go o d o f an experience as I and the o ther USC student that lived at B&G did.
Traveling abro ad will be the greatest decisio n yo u'll ever make. Amazing experience, yo u wo n't regret it if yo u put yo urself o ut there and explo re. Be o pen to trying new
things.
Go abro ad no matter where yo u get in
Have a blast!!! Yo u wo n't regret go ing abro ad! I lo ved every minute I was there, except fo r the ridiculo usly co ld weather at night.
Get as invo lved as yo u can and meet as many peo ple as yo u can. Travel as o ften as yo u can. Do n't wo rry abo ut missing anything back ho me, it will be the same when yo u
get back.
Enjo y every minute o f it. The time flies by and whatever lo catio n yo u receive yo u sho uld take the o ppo rtunity.
