34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
There are essentially 3 types o f classes at ESCP that USC students can take: - 2.5 ECTS "amuse bo uche" co urses: 5 weeks (5 sessio ns, 1 sessio n/week) - usually mo re
no n-traditio nal business areas (entrepreneurship, psycho lo gy related). These were my favo rites at ESCP since I seemed to luck o ut with very passio nate/go o d teachers.
Interesting to pics. - Of all the 5 ECTS elective co urses, they fall under "master 1" o r "master 2" classes - 1 being easier than 2. Then o f these they fall under mo re o r less
marketing, strategy and finance departments. Master 1 classes co rrespo nd to the Marshall co re level co urses, Master 2 the upper divs. Finance co urses generally tend to
be higher level than USC upper divs. Marketing co urses (even master 2 level) tend to be easier than Marshall upper divs. - 3 ho ur co urses with break in the middle -- hard to
co ncentrate in last ho ur especially when several co urses in o ne day - 10 -week semester with final exams as LAST sessio n o f the semester (electif co urse exams are no t
part o f the finals schedule o f ESCP. The electif co urse exams will take place either o n week 10 o r week 11 -- depending o n if pro fesso r cancelled a class during the
semester) - no textbo o ks required. teachers print all slides. can check o ut textbo o ks fro m library - i fo und textbo o ks useful fo r all my co urses.
Co mpared to USC academics, ESCP Euro pe is very "easy"
There are no hw assignments, very few pro jects. Very diso rganized. Many pro fesso rs were co nstantly late fo r classes, and several times classes were cancelled.
The rigidity in the system as in o nce yo u registered fo r a co urse, yo u ahve to stick with it and yo u are unable to chnage/dro p it Also , since it was a master level scho o l,
so me o f the finance co urses were mo re difficult than the o nes taught at SC
I felt that mo st o f the classes in France lacked a co ncrete structure. The classes seemed very easy superficially, but the tests were quite o ff base. The teachers tend to talk
witho ut a real fo cus o r structure. I didn't like this difference.
To be ho nest, these classes REALLY did no t wo rk well fo r me. So me were better than o thers and pro vided mo re info rmatio n, practice pro blems, and info rmatio n abo ut
what we'd be tested o n, but o ther co urses I felt like I had no idea what was expected o f me and no idea where to find necessary info rmatio n. I think fo r these classes yo u
have to be a very attentive in-class learner, and I usually learn o utside o f class by do ing practice pro blems in textbo o ks. Co urses are bland and three ho urs lo ng, and we
are o nly pro vided with co urse readers, very little example pro blems, and no textbo o ks to read fro m later. Therefo re, a lo t o f times when I go t to my ho mewo rk o r started
studying fo r an exam, I'd lo o k at a pro blem and feel really helpless because I'd have never seen anything like it befo re and I co uldn't find any explanatio n in the material o r
o nline. It made what sho uld have been really easy studying actually quite stressful befo re the exams. I do n't want to scare anyo ne o ff tho ugh, 4/5 o f my classes wo rked o ut
fine since they were pass/fail and no t much wo rk is required o utside o f class, but cho o se classes wisely (read reco mmendatio ns belo w), pay attentio n even when it
do esn't seem necessary.

Vero nique TRAN - Management & Emo tio ns (2.5 ECTS) - great pro fesso r with lo ts o f enthusiasm. sho rt but very interactive class. Jacqueline FENDT - Entrepreneurship

Anything by Andreas Kaplan. He is an amazing pro fesso r. Investment Banking and Financial Engineering by Michael Tro gue. A hard class, but yo u will learn alo t.
No
Co mmo dity Risk Management: steve Ohana CSR
I really liked 'So cial Media and Viral Marketing' It was super intense, but learned a lo t and was challenged. Pro fesso r Visco nti was a great teacher and very interesting, but
his test seemed o ff base fro m the material.
Valuatio n with Alberta Di Guili was enjo yable mainly because I can see her actually teaching at USC. Unlike mo st teachers, she actually talks to yo u, answers questio ns
understandably, and RESPONDS TO EMAIL! I still think the Valuatio ns co urse at USC is better because the entire co urse at ESCP is case-based and kind o f weird, but I
understo o d what was go ing o n and actually feel like i learned so mething. Co mmo dities Risk Management with Steve Ohana I read o n a past survey was so meo ne to stay

Buying Yo ur Own Business, it was easy and very little wo rk, but I can ho nestly say I didn't take anything away fro m it.
Gro up Financial Statements with Kennedy- No t really just with Kennedy, but also with ano ther teacher who taught in a co mpletely different way and to o k o ver the class
halfway thro ugh the semester. I to o k the exam to day, which was written by Kennedy but was pro cto red by the o ther teacher who had no idea ho w to answer questio ns (and

yo u wo uld like to share with upco ming exchange students preparing fo r their trip?
T e xt Re spo nse
- France: Carte 12-25 fo r train - bo o k France-Lo ndo Euro star much in advance - Go o gle Vo ice fo r pho ne :) - Lo o k into euro rail pass in the USA if yo u're interested in
multicity travels. Canno t buy that here. - co me with an empty suitcase if po ssible - yo u'll want it at the end. - tap water didn't get me sick anywhere in france o r italy - travel
bo o ks are helpful even if they remind yo u o f yo ur parents - do n't try to do everything. - yo u're studying abro ad, yo u'll see the kids fro m USC when yo u get back. make new
friends! that means in the future, yo u'll have a place to stay and a lo cal guide when yo u travel in no rway, germany, canada... (all the places yo ur new friends are fro m!)
Pretty cheap if yo u plan in advance. Feel free to e-mail me if yo u have any questio ns.
Just make sure to schedule yo ur classes in such a way that yo u have 3 day ho lidays and try to bo o k in advance since its a lo t cheaper
Ho stels are wo nderful as well as sties like airbnb.co m . Budget airlines are great if yo u kno w ho w to use them, but they are inherently built to screw yo u o ver, so make sure
yo u read thro ugh everything well befo rehand and o bey all the necessary stipulatio ns (like printing tickets befo rehand).
During the winter, I had a lo t o f difficulties co ming ho me fro m travelling because it seemed like everything shut do wn whenever there was sno w. I had to buy an emergency
$250 Chunnel ticket ho me fro m Lo ndo n after my flight go t cancelled three times befo re o rientatio n. Do n't cut it to o clo se befo re class. Also I was sho cked when plane
tickets weren't 8 0 euro ro und trip like I had been to ld. I spent abo ut $225-30 0 per trip. I think flying o ut o f Paris is a bit mo re.

No , tho ugh I did get a lo t o f unwanted sexual mo ves fro m guys, but I think that is just generally ho w the culture is o ver there.

Being able to go to the places I've learned abo ut/read abo ut/wanted to see fo r 6 , 7 years...
Ho w do I answer this questio n? EVERYTHING. Paris is THE best city in Euro pe and I'm glad I picked it as my lo catio n. The friends, memo ries and experience yo u will have
is unfo rgettable.
Making new friends fro m all o ver the wo rld; travel.

Being in Paris! It's such an incredible city with so much histo ry and beauty.
I really felt like I go t to live as a citizen o f Paris and really get settled. I lo ved having an apartment with o ne o ther girl, having a high level o f independence, and learning to do
everything fo r myself in the city and live like a lo cal wo uld. But really, the best part o f the pro gram is just Paris. It is the mo st spectacular city I've ever been to and I co uldn't

6 1. Describe a situatio n that yo u experienced as a result o f culture sho ck

T e xt Re spo nse
The French aren't kno wn fo r service... so instead o f turning up yo ur no se co nstantly at their bad service, it may be just easier to go alo ng with it. Yo u do n't have to appro ve,
but yo u also do n't need to make it fro m bad service to nasty service.
Remember, custo mer and service are two wo rds that do NOT go to gether in France. Yo u must wait fo r everything.
I think the culture o f France differs drastically fro m that in the U.S. Just a co mmo n day example, no o ne in france smiles, I eman they are no t particularly rude but yo u just
wo nt experience a warm friendly face yo ur accusto med to see in the U.S. Also , the french are no t the nicest if yo u do nt speak tehir language. ho wever, if yo u make an
attempt to try they are mo re than acco mo dating and definitely help yo u o ut

One time we were in line at a creperie late o ne night and these girls were passively aggressively asking my Vietnamese friend (in French) if she was American o r

fo r o ne o f my friends who was able to stick up fo r us in French. Meanwhile, the crepe maker was letting everyo ne cut us and to ld us to wait o ur turn. Every o nce in a while
yo u'll see examples o f ho w peo ple do n't like Americans, but this was the wo rst. I also o verheard so me peo ple saying that Americans started Wo rld War II when I was in
Berlin. Yo u can't really do anything except let it go and try to be nice.

I stuck to what I enjo yed and what I wished o ut o f the experience - add o n so me great lifelo ng friends to take ho me, pretty happy with that acco mplishment :)
I was a Research Assistant fo r a Finance pro fesso r at my scho o l. Always go o d to have co ntacts abro ad. And, the extra cash definitely came in handy.
I think my semester abro ad definitely made me a stro nger perso n, capable o f dealing with anything that co mes my way. Earlier there used to be a sense o f panic o r fear if
things went wro ng. But after go ing abro ad and having the mo st unexpected things go wro ng, no w if anything go es wro ng my tho ught pro cess literally redirects to ho w i can
fix it instead o f grieving o ver it. I have learned to fend fo r myself, ask fo r what i want and eventually ensure I get it.
I was independent and lived co mpletely o n my o wn and thrived.
Being able to speak so me French, really feeling like I was able to ado pt the "French way o f life," being independent

administrative things: cell pho ne cards, rail disco unt cards, etc.
I did my research and was well prepared.
I think no matter ho w much research yo u do befo re yo u leave its go ing to be less. Yo u elarn alo t mo re o nly o n getting there. All i can say is pack light, be alert, plan things
befo re hand and try to make the mo st o f the experience
That the scho o l has a lo t o f gro up pro jects and it was incredibly hard to wo rk with the students as mo st o f them literally just have to get a 10 /20 and they are happy. In
France, it is all abo ut the name and rank o f the university yo u attend, and many o f their students fail classes and it do esn't matter because they are at o ne o f the to p 3

Go o gle Map - make it yo ur best friend. Lo o k up ho w far yo ur ho stel is fro m where yo u want to be. So metimes it's wo rth paying a bit mo re to stay near the center.
Plan early. Spend so me time in yo ur ho st city and no t just traveling every weekend.
In euro pe atleast, try to take advantage o f all the lo w co st airlines since they have th best deals
Pack light.
I definitely have so me ho stels I wo uld reco mmend and so me I wo uldn't reco mmend. Sir To by's in Prague was the best! Bring lo cks when yo u travel. I also kept my US sim

T e xt Re spo nse
One semester abro ad is to o sho rt. Enjo y it, but do n't end up stressed trying to do to o much. It'll take time to get adjusted (adjusted do esn't mean just no t getting lo st).
Things (go o d and bad) will happen that yo u co uldn't have imagined in yo ur wildest dreams - just ro ll with the punches.
Yo ur experience will be o nly what yo u make it to be. Do no t let this o ppo rtunity pass yo u by. I read surveys o f o ther students and they all said that studying abro ad will be
the best experience o f yo ur life. I no w kno w why.
France is so o o o verrated, but it was so o o much wo rth it because I meet a lo t o f amazing peo ple and made to ns o f new friends
Im so jealo us haha, no but really make the mo st o f yo ur time there and try to so ak in as much o f cultur3e yo u can, learn the language, make many friends and explo re
Enjo y every minute o f it because it flies by way to o quickly. Take every o ppo rtunity that is presented to yo u even if yo u are tired, o r feeling lazy, etc. Walk! Walk everywhere.
Even if it wo uld take me an ho ur, I wo uld walk to the Lo uvre if I had the time because Paris is so beautiful and yo u see so much mo re o f it when yo u are walking aro und
instead o f riding in the metro .
I wo uld be very willing to o ffer any advice! Do no t be afraid to study abro ad, it is really a o nce in a lifetime o ppo rtunity. Yo u will never be able to truly LIVE in a city abro ad
and be as carefree as a student and mingle with o ther students and get to ano ther culture like this. Sure yo u can always travel to Euro pe, but no thing co mpares to this type
o f experience. DO IT!!
