VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram?
T e xt Re spo nse
I decided to study in Spain to impro ve my Spanish skills, and I knew I'd be much mo re immersed in the language in Madrid than Barcelo na (where Catalan, and a lo t o f
English, is spo ken). That being said, it's extremely impo rtant to understand that immersio n is a cho ice. I arranged to live with a Spanish family in Madrid, so I had a lo t mo re
language practice than o ther USC and American students living with o nly USC/American students. Being in Euro pe was ano ther huge part o f my cho ice, as I wanted the
o ppo rtunity to explo re the co ntinent and visit different co untries. In bo th respects, my expectatio ns were mo re than exceeded!
Co uldnt see myself anywhere else except Madrid.
I knew I wanted to study in Madrid in o rder to learn mo re abo ut spanish culture and impro ve my spanish. I cho o se UC3M and no t IE because I wanted a scho o l with a large
amo unt o f exchange students fro m all aro und the wo rld.
Always wanted to study in Spain and Madrid is abo ut as Spanish as it gets
Wanted to be immersed in the Spanish culture and be in Madrid, seemed to have a decent amo unt o f marketing classes available.

34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
Each co urse met twice a week, and 4 o ut o f 5 o f my classes met fo r an ho ur each time. Once class met fo r an ho ur and a half at a time. Mo st co urses are arranged so that
the first meeting fo cuses o n theo ry/lecture, and the seco nd is mo re practical (wo rking thro ugh practice pro blems, case studies, presentatio ns, gro up wo rk, etc.). The wo rk

o ther lo catio ns. We had a lo t o f co nsistent wo rk thro ugho ut the semester, and almo st every assignment was do ne in gro ups. Mo st o f my classes had assignments due
every week, and we had to spend a lo t o f time studying, co mpleting assignments, and preparing presentatio ns o utside o f class. Midterms, papers, presentatio ns, etc. make
up a large pro po rtio n o f the co urse grade at UC3M. The final exam is wo rth between 40 % and 6 0 % o f the final co urse grade. The material was also surprisingly difficult, and
altho ugh I can say I've learned a lo t, I was expecting a lighter wo rk lo ad during a semester abro ad. The do wnside was that I fo und the level o f instructio n very po o r, and I
ended up having to teach myself a lo t o f the difficult material because it was po o rly explained in class. 3 o ut o f my 5 pro fesso rs had never taught a class befo re, and their
lack o f experience o ften sho wed. The midterms are created by a department co o rdinato r, so they were usually very difficult co mpared to the teaching ability o f the pro fesso r.
The grading systems were a little unclear co mpare to the o nes at USC.
The classses at my scho o l were extremely disappo inting. The lectures were incredible uninteresting, the teachers had enthusiasm and o ften lacked kno wledge o n the to pic,
there was a lo t o f busy wo rk fo r so me classes and no wo rk fo r o thers. The finals were the majo rity o f the grade, which ended up hurting me because I was so po o rly
prepared fo r the exams due to the lack o f info rmatio n taught by the pro fesso rs.
10 po int grading scale, liked USC better
It differs in almo st every way imaginable, it is almo st no t even co mparable. I didn't at all like these differences. The classes are no t always in the same ro o m and no t all the
ho lidays are in the calendar befo re. I had two weeks between my last class and first exam. There is very little wo rk and hardly any tests all semester and then the final is
wo rth 50 % o f yo ur grade and they subtract po ints fo r inco rrect answers. The teachers are o ften grad students and there is far less structure than USC in LA. All the students
there are o nly trying to pass so getting the equivalent o f a pass at USC (which is higher than UC3M) is no t easy.

Mo netary and Financial Eco no mics with Nawid Siassi. The co urse seemed daunting at first because I'd never seen the material befo re, but this pro fesso r was better than

definitely manageable if yo u put effo rt into studying. He really wanted us to do well and o ffered an o ppo rtunity fo r extra credit befo re the final exam. Inno vatio n Management

Altho ugh he's never taught a class befo re, he was extremely arro gant and didn't make an effo rt to help students. He assigned a new case study every week, fo r which each
gro up had to prepare a 10 minute po werpo int presentatio n. Ho wever, there wasn't time fo r all gro ups to present each week, so we o ften spent ho urs preparing and never
ended up presenting, which was frustrating. He didn't pro vide any feedback o r grades o n assignments thro ugho ut the semester. Optimizatio n and Simulatio n in Business
with Belen Martin Barragan. Really nice, pro fesso r, but again, no experience teaching. She had a difficult time explaining co ncepts in class, and it was so metimes difficult to
understand her bro ken English. Ho wever, the material wasn't extremely difficult, and if yo u have a 75% average befo re the final yo u do n't have to take the final exam!
Eco no mics classes in UC3M tend to be mo re challenging. Be prepared to spend a lo t o f time o n it if yo u decide to take o ne.
Do no t take Security Analysis - I was no t at all prepared. I taught myself everything since I had no backgro und in the to pic. The math was incredibly hard and the teacher was
awful. I spent the majo rity o f my semester trying to teach myself everything.
No

I wish we co uld take mo re classes that wo uld allo w us to learn abo ut the culture o f o ur lo catio n, rather than all business classes. I've already taken 30 7, so I didn't learn

I'd definitely like to see mo re help o n ho using co o rdinatio n. Go ing to Madrid witho ut kno wing where to live was very scary.
I think that this pro gram sho uld adjust the grading system. USC required me to maintain a 6 in o rder to pass my classes. Ho wever, passing is 5 at this university. The way
that the exams are created is that they deduct po ints o n yo ur multiple cho ice if yo u get a wro ng answer. I always go t abo ve a 6 0 % o n my assignments but o ften go t belo w
that based o ff this ridiculo us grading system. I think USC sho uld readjust the requirements so that we o nly need a 5 to pass. While it so unds easy, I studied A LOT this
