TEXAS JUVENILE CRIME PREVENTION CENTER 2015-16 BROWN BAG SERIES Evaluation of the African American Faith-Based Mental Health Education and Awareness Initiative Camille Gibson, Ph.D., C.R.C. In 2014 the Hogg Foundation awarded funding to 10 African American faith-based organizations for use over three years to increase awareness about mental health, wellness and recovery; to support the mental wellness of faith leaders and, to connect persons with community mental health resources. The focus on African Americans is in response to their reduced likelihood of utilizing mental health services when in emotional distress given the stigma of mental illness, the cost of services and a lack of information about therapy (Mental Health America, 1996). All of the churches are in Texas; one in Taylor, one in Fort Worth, three in Dallas and five in the Houston area. Thereafter an evaluator and a coordinator were included in the initiative to assist the churches to both have and to demonstrate substantial impact.
